I'm having a problem, Illustrator says there's not enough memory to open the illustration. I have about three quarters of an illustration done and I need to open it. Only problem is when I try to open it I get that error. My memory allocated to Illi is 110MB so that shouldn't be that REAL problem. HELP!

These suggestions may be really lame, as you probably are more Mac-savvy than me:

(1) Just restart your Mac. Maybe some other RAM-hungry app just won't give it up. I know there are apps to free up RAM in such cases, but I don't have one of these, and I can't assume that you do. In which case, restarting is the only solution.

(2) Try rebuilding your desktop and (using DiskWarrior or other) rebuilding the directory. I've gotten wierd error messages sometimes when that is all that is the problem. You could also try zapping the PRAM.

(3) Select the original icon of Illustrator, and go to File, Get Info (of course) and change the memory to a much lower figure, like no more than is suggested.

(4) If none of the above work, you can always reinstall Illustrator. Of course if this doesn't work, you could have a problem with your memory chips, or maybe your hard drive is too full, or needs to be defragged

Just guessing now. Hope some of my suggestions help...

It doesn't have to be a RAM problem. Try choosing another or a second scratch disk/partition where Illustrator can put its temporary files (edit->preferences).

There are many reasons why Illustrator is balking.
First off, what version of Illustrator are you using?
How large is the file you are trying to open? Does it include any placed or pasted images? If so, how large are those?
Is the art extremely detailed? Lots of control points? Does it use a lot of fonts? Lots of layers?
As extreme as 110M of RAM sounds, you might be suprised what bumping up the allocation might accomplish.

There's a great little utility that trys to grab the RAM back if possible. I can't recall the name, but someone can search for it, and its not TurboMem which has gotten bad reviews. It was called something like Clear Memory. It was a one-trick pony and seemed to really help when in that situation of fragmented RAM.

Its possible your illustrator is messed up and needs reinstallation, but it *could* be your file that is corrupted, in which case none of these will help except perhaps the desktop rebuild and DISKWARRIOR options that might fix minor errors in the disk that would fix the opening of the file.

Hope you got that fixed! Good Luck! Vive la Macintosh!

Is MacOSPurge the program you are thinking about? That was a great piece of software. Have you tried a different scratch disk?
