Thanks for your input! Did a little thinking, a little drawing, and this is what I came up with. Apologies in advance for the file size.
I just picked one of the examples, based on IceEnclosure's feedback: the one-color one. This, actually is the most flexible. Because, you can buy one color, and use one color plate, but change the color of the t-shirt underneath for no added cost. (What you're paying for is the plate and the number of colors, just like in regular printing, along with the t-shirts themselves.) And, in this case, think about changing the shirt color based on the user's star colors ...
As for printing the wrap-around graphic, it's certainly doable, but you just have to find a screenprinter that *cares* enough to do a good job. A good screenprinter can print the front, and the back, and have the image meet up well at the seam under the arm. Good equipment (M&R presses, for instance) also goes a long way.
idjeff, I wasn't real keen on the quote anyway, so I just dropped it for this round. If you think of a better quote (perhaps one that doesn't involve "all your ____ belong to us"), let me know.

hey servo, try C.1.B with a yellow outline around MacNN (making the whole thing two colors) and maybe just one larger outlined star instead of 5.
i'm thinking we'll close this to entries on Sunday afternoon (US pacific time).
then we'll have a vote on which designs you like best, we'll take the top few and the mods/admins will have a vote. slight alterations might be made, but if you voted for the design here, the final result will be very similar.
oh, and a big thanks to every who has/will enter. we've got some great designs that i'm sure people will be proud to wear. and once we get em out to you all, we'll have to start the "hey, i spotted some guy on the street with a MacNN shirt!" thread in the lounge.

servo, i kind of understand that my shop may handle the printing of these shirts, and if that's the case, i'll have to ask my screenprinter about that wraparound(he gets back on the 10th).. you are correct, it definitely can be done, i just don't want to say we can if we can't.. but i actually don't see why we can't
nice job on the design.. i think it's cool.. one thing tho, the stars .. i plan on hangin' around these boards for a while, and i don't want my shirt to get 'outdated' with the stars.. I still feel it's a strong design without them, and you maybe can come up with something else for that area? just an idea

OK, it's Sunday night. Remember to specify exactly which design you're voting for. You can, if you want, mix and match elements from one design onto another. We want the best possible outcome.
Let the voting begin!

I vote for Ruddigger's 100% MacNN shirt. Maybe the front can be changed a little. Maybe MacNN in the upper right.

I like ruddiger's royal blue one. The one with www.macnn.com on the back and the oval shaped MacNN logo on the front.

This one totally rocks. Although I think the white url should be on the back... I think he meant to do that but screwed up the pictures. BTW, this is a really lame way of voting, couldn't there be some sort of HTML poll with cookies so people don't cheat?

No, I meant to do it that way... Every shirt i've seen/have ha the big graphics on the back, and smaller graphics, (if anything) on the front... Why would it be the other way around?
Anyway, if enough people want to change it around, who am I to argue, but I thk it looks better the way it is...

I like Tom Servo's. With the wraparound magnifying tool.
The proportions of the text and logo look good and its stylish but not too "out-there", so it draws attention to itself nicely, in a mac-like way.

To be honest, I wouldn't want any of them. They're just too much ' here's another T-shirt with a logo that nobody pays any attention to except those who already know it ' .
Oh, mods you should just decide, don't have a vote on something designed because you'll end up with the least offensive, compromised, yawn solution.
Enough positivism, why don't you all go to a real art school for a couple of years, and try again.

Uh, ok, I guess you don't wear T-Shirts then... So, don't buy one.. As a matter of fact, why even look into this thread at all?

Why don't you get a warm glass of shut the hell up? Who the **** are you to say that I haven't gone to a real art school? And, who the ****k are you to say that that would even matter? And, who the **** are you to say put down myself and the others who have submitted designs? I don't remember seeing anytihng from you, so why don't you just take your foot out of your mouth, and find a corner to sit in? Oy...

I hile I like the designs, I wouldn't buy one. I would really like it if someone designed a shirt that wasn't so branded. Like a smaller logo, and more of a design. I don't want to be a billboard. I want to be in style, and part of the cult. You know what I mean?

Ruddigger, just giving my opinion on the submitted designs, I can't help that they look like they do. Maybe the comment about the art school was a bit nasty, I'll take that back. We don't always have to be 'nice', I'm used to call it ugly if I think so, and if you've been to an art school you can handle that, and you did, in your own ***king style. Maybe you should use that temper a bit in your art.

Maybe if you'd paid attention at whatever "prestigous" art school you may have slept your way through, you would have realized that the purpose of a critique isn't to bash people or their work. It's to help them improve on it, to help them see what they've done from an fresh point of view. You've done neither, all you've done is crap on what I and others have done, and no, niceness isn't a necessity, but it is a courtesy. Being courteous is obviously something new to you however...

Sorry I haven't posted sooner ... I was in LA for some emergency work stuff. But, here's some revised versions based on timo's feedback. I made one with a far more diminutive logo, and one with no logo at all.
I kept the address on the sleeve, because something has to say MacNN.

I really like the revisions that have been done to this design. I think that the stars add a real touch of class. I would hate to see them droped from the design. What about stars on the sleeve and the web site on the back?? Just a sugestion.. Really like the design Tom looks good.

In order to save my sanity, I'd like to suggest to the class that this is primarily a vote sitch. So, feel free to find the shirt you like best from the stuff we have so far. Last Sunday was the deadline, so I kind of cheated with the revision based on Timo's suggestion.
Everyone's opinion matters, and it's great to see the interest, but I'm going to stop making comps to match peoples suggestions. It's in the interest of fairness.
So no more revisions for now ... let's just vote. We can go through a whole revisions process (so we can at least try to make most of everyone happy ) after we decide on a basic design.
Robert
P.S.: A vote for MrTomServo is a vote for peace!

otis.. if you want class, why not put a rolls royce image on the back of the shirt? surely you could, eh? or maybe scan one of your big gold chains and screen that onto the shirt?

i'll vote for tomservo's c.1.b.3, and i'll explain why.
every other design offered thus far (no offense to the creators) just looks like someone cut and pasted the MacNN logo onto a drawing of a t-shirt, and toyed around in photoshop. that design is the only one that goes beyond being a walking billboard for MacNN and actually is a design. Therefore, c.1.b.3 gets my vote.
I know we're not doing any more revisions for now and stuff, and i know it's a little early to be getting into nitpicky stuff like this...but here goes anyway. The magnifying glass - it was a lot better when you had the handle turned upward. Right now, it basically serves as an arrow leading to one's ass crack...which might not necessarily be a bad thing if you have a good ass, but that's an awfully hearty assumption to make for as varied a group as MacNNers. Plus, having it point up makes it serve as an arrow pointing to the center of the magnifying glass - which is really the shirt's focal point in the first place.
As for the address on the sleeve, i think a really simple typeface like helvetica neue or univers works better than the Adobe Garamond(?)or whatever is being used currently (even though it matches the MacNN logo). What I'm talking about is something like this: .
P.S. I also like it because it doesn't employ the stars, which I think are cheesy on the web site, and even cheesier on a t-shirt.

I kinda like Ruddiger's first design with the vertical stripe, even though I think it would look nice with a blue stripe one yellow or vice versa. I absolutely love idjeff's blue design with the yellow stripe over the shoulders. But because it's technically not possible,
I vote for MrTomServo's c.1.b.2.
The large, split magnifying glass is a great idea and works both as a design element and for logo recognition. I think that only one color, as in c.1.b.3 is boring. In addition, the full MacNN logo needs to be on there. After all, these T-shirts should not just look nice but also provide some free advertising for our favorite site. Finally, I would make sure that the sleeve says www.MacNN.com and not www.macnn.com. The capitalization eases reading.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

As I doubt MacNN is going to be taking a hit on the cost of the shirt, I don't necessarily agree with the "free advertising" assertion. I definately don't think the URL should be capitalized, nor should the www. be included in the address. It's generally considered bad form to capitalize URLs, and the www. is totally unnecessary these days.
