Creating data and mask from Photoshop layer?

Is there an easy way of creating separate pure data and mask layers from a layer with transparency, for icons and such? At the moment I use IconBuilder as a work-around, which lets you extract data and mask onto a layer, but it's a bit of a pain, really.
