I made this one a while back ago, and I still think it's a work of art. I can't remember exactly what I did to make that robot hand so surrealisticly (un)real, but it must have been something good.
This 1600x1200 desktop is just IMHO excellent. The details, the curves, the subliminal psychedlic-patterned apple, the font and the brain-scan image combined with the subtle colors makes up for my favorite desktop image ever...
OK... enough self-praise... time for you to pick it apart:

Kind of Johnny Mnemonic meets Lost in Space.
I'm getting tired of seeing images with the 'television' scan artifacts just as an effect. When its used for color fills and patterns its one thing, but for most photographic images, it just looks like its trying too hard. The subtle changes and detailing in the background is nice. I'd like to see it emphasized (but not overly so) by creating atmospheric lighting effects rather than using the scan-line effect.
The general mood of the desktop is good. The contrast will still allow for items to sit atop it without causing too much confusion. If I were to put a strong text element into something like this, I'd use a font with more tehnological feel to it than what was used for, "We shall prevail." This may help fit in the feel of the image and basic qualities of the image I'm looking at.
Hope that doesn't sound too brutal. Its just constructive criticism.

Well, this was made in a time where scan-lines where still cool. However this was also the last time I did anything with scanlines...
I chose the font because it looks great at that size. The curves and circles gives it the right look I was looking for here

Like the idea...The combination of 3D elements with text, color, and photos is a tight style...
If I only has $8,000 for Maya..

I wanted to be a artist but I became a graphic designer...

Never click back when you've posted. And when you do double-post, edit the second message...
Thanks for the comments. But there is really no 3D elements in this picture. The robot-hand is actually a very heavily modified picture.

I can understand the scanlines from your mentioning you did this a while ago. Who knows with the speed of trends and computing moving so fast, it may be 'retro' and hip again in a few months!
But, my feeling with the typeface not matching the other styles in the image still remains. But hey, its ok to have a differing opinion on such things!

I still think they look like some sort of futuristic hieroglyphics. What text would you suggest? LED? Countdown-style? Pixelated?
Yup... it's time to be retro... AYBABTU here we come
