Hi everyone,
I thought this would be the right forum to ask for some advice as to how to go about making a Photo Realistic Icon based on the briefcase in the photo here

So basically, how do I take the briefcase out of the picture(just use the lasso?) and then how do I make it look good for an icon in OS X.\

Tools at my disposal are the Gimp, Appleworks, Graphic Converter, and Photoshop 5 LE(Although that one is on my other computer, hence more work).

Thanks,
David

open the document with photoshop. zoom in on the image and, using the pen tool, create points along the edge of the briefcase. once you've got the entire briefcase described, create a path and copy the contents. paste into a new document and you're good to go.

But then how do you apply it and retain the transparent areas?

I think the easiest method is to head over to the IconFactory and download the IconBuilder Pro plug-in for Photoshop. It comes with a very easy to follow tutorial.

Wow! Thanks. You didn't have to do that. I'll put you in the credits of the program. Email me if you want details.
