I got Illustrator 10 about a week or two ago (as mentioned in my previous topic post). I've been goofing around with it for a while now making several little doodles but nothing major. However, I'm proud to present my first quasi-finished Illustrator pic.

My Pic (108KB)

I realize the text isn't too great but I didn't expect it to; that's what I'm still working on. I just put it on there so you could get an idea of the basic layout.

So what do you guys think? Any comments/suggestions? The more the merrier!

hey that's pretty nice.

i'm not a graphic designer, but i'm just wondering... what is the difference between illustrator and photoshop? i'm somwhat clueless when it comes to that sort of thing. photoshop, illustrator, freehand, it makes no sense to me!

pretty nice. as you said, the text needs work. and the linux background could use a little...oomph.

milhous, photoshop is pixel based (those little square things on your screen). illustrator (and freehand, flash, etc..) are vector based. they use math to draw lines, circles, squares, etc...
while you can do some "vector-esque" type stuff in ps 6, illustrator is still the place to do it if you're really serious. the benefit of using a vector based app over a pixel based one is one of resizing (among others). since it just uses math, you can resize, fill with different colors, adjust bezier curves, etc.. all without losing quality. try resizing a photoshop photo 600% and see what kind of quality you get.

but basically you use illustrator if you know how to draw (as mchladek has demonstrated). or if you are really good at arranging geometric shapes to look purty . my drawing skills leave something to be desired, so i stick to photoshop mostly.

Hehe, I see a mix of kinda boring art with some really cool art!

That penguin... not quite my style, but if you like him, keep it. That gray background needs to go though...unless you're trying to point out how icky and boring UNIX interfaces are

That Windows logo is really slick. Cool.

The Apple logo - did you draw that by hand at an angle like that? I'm a pretty decent drawer, but one thing I can't do is draw anything that looks close to the apple logo. The logo you did there is great, different in a way that actually adds to its funkiness - the little rounding in it that's not present on the real Apple logo helps this picture, since it offsets the sharpness of the Windows.

I'd make a more cartoony penguin, something with more life in it, that's all. Good job.

If you ever put a blue to purple to red to orange to yellow to green gradient in a piece of artwork again I will kill you.

Just wondering, since this is OS X, shouldn't a "Daemon" be rolling the apple, and not that penguin? My desktop is a picture of the Daemon holding a pitchfork with the linux penguin at the end.
