What hardware are you wanting to run this on? It would be directly related to what versions of software you *could* run on the computer.

Superpaint!!! (and its 'pouch' for special plug-ins)

CricketDraw and CricketGraph and CricketPresents!!! Hypercard for presentations or minimal database or multimedia (The original Myst was developed using Hypercard)

My personal favorite is Adobe Illustrator 88.

The greatest loss of anti-competitive behavior AldusPersuasion (which was discontinued after being purchased by Adobe because of Microsoft's bundling and promoting of Powerpoint which was vastly inferior at the time).

And one that still has no analogous equivalent in modern software is the photocompositing and editing software for enormous files called LivePicture!. Photoshop's histograms and newer caching are still not on par with the speed of layout and use of this app!

I'm beginning research on writing a history of desktop publishing and design on the macintosh. I have collected old hardware and intend on a museum of working machines with the software they were capable of running for early computer design and publishing. Any further suggestions and recollections of software would be great!!!

Yes, yes, YES!!! This has to be one of the saddest. Persuasion was excellent even for its time, and even though it didn't have the goodies Powerpoint currently does, it worked so well. Powerpoint is such a pain (I also have to always use it on a PC at work) and quirky. Having a healthy competitor for Powerpoint (I don't think Appleworks is quite there yet)would be such a boon.

I learned desktop on Aldus Pagemaker 3.0, and have fond memories of it... Also, Aldus Freehand 3.0 was fun, and way better than illustrator at the time...

I also used to do quick n dirty flyers and tabletents in Macdraw, mainly cuz it had rotate feature before pagemaker did, and it had few sys requirements so ran on lousy SE30.

*Macromind* Director

What happened to Aldus anyway? I know their apps ended up in Adobe's court with Freehand going to Macromedia.

You new-schoolers with your fancy macs and vector programs and fancy right-aligned text.

I got me a Koala Pad and some brøderbund paint. The "mirror" effect is totally tripping. That's why they call me G! As in "GS" as in "][GS"
