here's an image that I find really nice

(Garbage's latest album, beautiful garbage) I would like to experiment with creating something similar. However, I'm not sure where to start.

It's probably done in some 3d software but what should I use in order to create the 'breaking' effect?

mmm, goona take a stab.

It looks like first layer is the rose. Then a duplicate layer of the rose that has a variety of filters run on it. Some type of fragment or distortion filter or effect. Then it looks like a liquid filter or similar distortion effect to the reamining fragments.

Then, the rose is transparently blended into the 2nd layer.

The the type is duplicated, and the 2nd type layer has motion blur or possibly wind filter on it.

Should get you started any ways

Its either the hard way or the easy way. The easy way is the one above. The hard way would be that the bottom "shattered" layer is a 3D model. But knowing how lazy *I* am, and therefore knowing how lazy a designer can be... I'd be willing to bet its the process above, good call kidred.

When is that album coming out? Then again its probably out and this is just another sign of me getting old...

It is a 3D rose... Designers cannot afford to be lazy when they work in a high end firm such as the ones that design Album Covers and ads for big name cleints... there is no way to get the effects portrayed in that image EASILY without the help of a 3D app. Look at the shadows and the "shards" of the rose... that is no little Photoshop filter job. Lazyness is not a factor when dealing with clients like the music industry... I could see being lazy if you worked for a University newspaper but NOT in a design firm.

I would have to say that 60% of all design firms are major RIP-OFFS! The rest are expensive... With design, you don't always get what you pay for. If you don't watch yourself, you will end up holding two CD's worth $.20¢ and a corporate card with -$20,000 for a balance.

If you're working with a decent firm you'll get exactly what you paid for... it is my experiance that when you skimp on cost they tend to mess up more and/or lose interest. Design costs money... if you can't afford it... you DO get what you pay for.

ha.. i totally agree on that.. wise words, indeed. besides.. we need the cash to pay for our internet bills, macs, magazines, books, ram, software, fuel, food, coffee.. more $$ should justify for the lack of sleep I'm getting too..
