I would like to migrate my font collection from 9.2 to OS X. While I understand that I will not need to do anything to the files, I am not 100% sure how to do that. I understand that the fonts go into ~/Library/Fonts/ or /Library/Fonts.

The main question that remains is, what to do about file name extensions for TrueType or Type I Postscript font files. With the Type I fonts, what would I do with the font suitcases?

This is the same issue as i am having. I think the lack of response to your post is everyone's equal confusion as to how we are supposed to manage something that was previously fairly elegant.

I agree that there is a lot of confusion out there about fonts and OSX..
I am just holding out for Font Reserve and Suitcase.
I think I will miss ATM though, it was simple, easy, and fast...for me at least, I have heard of other people having problems with ATM.

Suicase 10.1 works great (when it's out) and the learning curve for ATM Deluxe users is smooth.

I just copied all my files over from my OS 9 Fonts folder to my OS X fonts folder, and haven't had any problems. I didn't do anything to the filename extensions, I just left them how they were. I only copied the ones from OS 9 that I didn't have in X though, that way I wouldn't overwrite anything or mess anything up.

-Jereome....Nice picture, lol.

I hate everyone equally.

I think I found the answer.

Clue 1: doing an ls -la on the /Library/Fonts directory I noticed that the file size of all my Type 1 fonts was zero.

Clue 2: Some of the other participants in this thread mentioned having booted into Classic and having copied the fonts with the Classic Finder.

This leads me to the conclusion that my problem has been that, however I did the copy operation, only the empty data fork of the font files was copied. On the Mac the font Postscript code is in the resource fork. Hopefully copying with the Classic Finder will keep the font files intact.

I am going to try this later, to see, whether I am right.

Actually, it didn't work. While being booted into OS 9, I copied all of the Postscript fonts and the suitcase file of one font from the Fonts folder to /Library/Fonts. Contrary to before, when logging into OS X again, the files there now possessed the correct icons, but were still not recognized in any application's font menu.

perhaps pulling out the individual files from within the suitcase? (this is why I am in ABSOLUTLY no rush to move my fonts on over to X...)

OS X can handle all kinds of fonts, you know where toput them already, try this, put them there, and see what happens, they you'll be amazed when it works fine, plus os X can handle hundreds of fonts, at once. No 128 font limit, i've got about 350+ fonts on 10 righ now, and htye all work just fine, plus i could add hundreds more if i wanted. You learn by trying
, try somethign. and hey, if you don't get the results you desire, go bcak to where you were...

Well, I did used OS 9 to copy my Type 1 files and the matching font suitcases to /Library/Fonts/. What more is there to try?

The matter of the fact is that it doesn't work fine.
