OK, I just got a new computer G4 733. On my older system, I would never have considered using OSX as my home work computer, but now I'm considering it. I use Quark and a bunch of other applications that are only OS9. Some are on their way, others are at least six months to a year away.
Do I go back and forth (OS9 when I need it, and OSX for fun) or is that walking a fine line with that idea. I know OSX isn't ready for me 100% of the time. It just isn't.
I'm wondering what everyone else does. And don't give me "I'm 100% OSX" unless you are. I am not going to use Adobe InDesign (it's a great application, but I'm just not going to do it, I have too much invested in Quark) HELP?

Every time I get close to going over to OS X full time, something prevents me from it.
For example, VPC in X just isn't up to VPC in 9. Quark is not set for X. I don't feel like shelling out $250 for my Office upgrade. My scanner works in 9, perhaps in X with some third party drivers, but the special features of it don't.
Finally I need a good back-up solution for X.
I wouldn't mind working in X and classic, but some things like the scanner just don't work in X at all.

This is exactly the dilemma I face -- and I'm using an iBook (500 / 384MB RAM)! I love OS X, warts and all, and try to use it as much as I can for browsing, research, E-mail, writing, a little coding, watching DVDs, and so forth.... And even a *smidgen* of design, when it's small. But whenever I need to do some serious work, be it print or web, I pretty much have to boot back into OS 9.
I'd like OS X to be there but it's just not there yet -- especially on this machine. I use Quark a good deal as well, and while it's sort of almost usable in Classic (sort of), there are a few things that drive me up the wall -- no doubt I don't have to list them. Office I've basically weaned myself off from, so it's not an issue for me, but I definitely symp. w/ your hesitation to pay that kind of upgrade fee just for a native version.
I'm sure the G4 will make things easier for you either way (pretty fast boots, as I know from work). In my case, it does feel a little schizophrenic sometimes going back and forth, but it also does really make one appreciate the good and bad points about each. (I would prefer to be using X full-time, but for those pesky performance issues, and a handful of upgrades. And Quark -- heaven only knows when Quark will be Carbonized.) Obviously, things like sharing an iTunes playlist between 9 and X make this kind of walking-on-the-line easier: little things like that.
Anyway, it's not something you can to have to decide on right away. You can try doing your design in X, and if you're frustrated, just boot back to 9.
Hope this was helpful.

95% OS9
5% OSX
I usually only switch over to X for fun. I play around with it for a bit, try to see what new/exciting things I can do edit, and then I boot back into 9. I don't have FCP3 yet, PS 7 isn't out yet, and I've spent years setting up OS7,8,9 just the way I like it. So it'll take me a bit of time before I feel as comfortable (and at home) in X (hence me using it 5%...probably 10% or 15% soon).
For a long while it was a UW SCSI card holding me back, now it's mostly two apps that I shall get within the next 6 months. So I predict I'll be using X just about full time by...oh...August or so.

Actually, this is just the feedback that I'm looking for. I know I can't use OSX 100% of the time, but I wish I could. The eyecandy is hard to give up, and I'm starting to like some of the features. Yes, the beachball isn't fun, but I hope that will be fixed with time.
For now, I'm 100% OS9 for work and 100% OSX for fun...
I don't care for how everyone is making a new version just for OSX (Illustrator, Quark, Word, Photoshop) Yes, the have added a few things, but a whole new version? Illustrator has gone from Illustrator 6 to Illustrator 10 in less then four years!

Until I get Photoshop, Dreamweaver (I know about GoLive), and scanner support in X, I'll be using 9 about 40% of the time. Classic is horrible on a G3/350 so don't tell me to use it!

I just made the switch full time....classic actually is not so bad...I use photoshop/dreamweaver/flash all in Classic and I'm ok with it.
The one problem I've had is finding an FTP client that works all of the time in X because Fetch won't work with Classic and it's all messed up in X.
Every once in a while though..I have to boot into 9 (usually to FTP to certain servers) and boy do I miss it. So quick (i'm on a Pismo 400 though)
You just have to do it...at first you won't be as productive but after a solid week in X you should be back up to speed..even if you're in Classic a lot..

Maybe 70/30:X/9 At work I'm 100% 9 but for contract stuff and home use I'm about 60/40 X/9 so it balances out more or less. For heavy duty flash stuff and director work I'm all 9 all the time, but for lighter stuff, html, illustrator, photoshop stuff, Classic reniced to -20 squeeks out enough performance most of the time.

Hmmm, everyone is helping, but I have so many issues... Should I get Office X, or just Office 2001. I think I'm going to be using OS 9 a good bit, and can't really hurry up and boot into X... On my old machine, I would keep track of client phone calls/projects in the memo section in Enturage.

I've been toggling back and forth between 9.2, Classic and X on my newest G4. Goofy font and networking issues prevent me from using X for some things, plus I need to use Quark and Photoshop all the time.
I plan to keep an older G4 with all my 9 apps on it "just in case" (because I am a professional worrier), but also have InDesign installed "just in case" Quark doesn't get around to making an X version for a few years.

they're making up for the 5 years in the middle nineties where they didn't update at all.

I'm almost on X all the time. I work mostly with After Effects, I've got FCP3 for video, Illustrator, now Flash, I use a beta of Photoshop 7 (slow but usable) with my Agfa scanner native (works from Photoshop), Office v.X, Suitcase 10.1... The only thing missing for me is Premiere (for compatibility with the office PCs) and Reason 2.0 but it's coming in Q2 of 2002. I'd like Dreamweaver but I don't use it much anyway.
