I would like to purchase a CRT monitor that has great colors and those annoying line(s) whatever they call them (the ones that don't go away) are either gone or barely visible. The view area should be 17 through 22 inches. Any great values out there?

So far I'm considering LaCie, Mitsubishi and Sony (in that order). Any advice appreciated.

Thanks!

I dunno what you mean about "those lines" but hands down sony trinitrons rock my world. I swear by em. (as does just about every other designer I know. other than that weird one who uses the lacie with the hood, I never got that.)

Thanks for your post. In regards to:

I dunno what you mean about "those lines"
Some monitors have one or more of what appears to be rows of dead pixels. On some monitors these are not very prominent , on others it almost seems as though a coworker took a pencil and a ruler and pulled a prank on you.

Anyways, I assume that not all Sony's are created equal. What model do you use?

the trinitron line as a whole is pretty good, no dead pixel lines that i can see on my pair of:

A400's

but if you've got the cash: fw900's

those annoying lines are called horizontal stabilizer lines. Trinitrons have 1 (maybe 2) and Diamondtrons have 2. well, trinitrons and diamondtrons are the best quality CRTs so i guess you can't really help it.

I'm not sure what mitsubishi model you're considering, but the diamondtron, higher level 19' display is the same thing as the La Cie electron blues.. lacies use diamondtrons but slight different electronics inside.

I have a La Cie electron blue 19' II.. it's a great monitor, in fact, i'd say it's the best 19' monitor on par with sony's high-end trinitrons. Not like those cheap 200 dollar 19" monitors.. there is a huge difference. you really get what you pay for with monitors. Oh however, i don't know what the spec is with the new electron blue III models.. they seem a little cheaper, but quality-wise, i havn't seen it.

I'm learning quite a few things from postings, thanks. I rather spend about $500 but maybe I can go up to $1000 (electron 22blue III) if the quality is that much better and if my wife wants to remain married after that...

I saw the Sony A400 at a local dealer and it looked good but it had Widonze XP on it so I couldn't really gauge how good OS X would look on it -since OS X has antialiased text etc.

What are the key specs to consider?

For $1000
LaCie 22blue III

For $500
LaCie 19blue III

Thanks!

if you have around $500 dollars to spend, and you wanna get a good quality monitor perhaps destined for a bit 2d of work, then i suggest either the lacie electron blue III or the sony G420S. they're both 19" monitors, and i don't think the big 22" is really necessarily unless if you're heavily into dtp... the diff between lacie 19' and 22' is mostly the size.. they're both quality monitors.

if i were in your shoes, my factor for the decision would be whether i have a quicksilver g4 (silver... sony silver monitor would go with it) or the graphite g4 (the lacie monitors go well with the colour) but that's purely cosmetic heh..

no need for divorice over a monitor.. maybe a cinema display or the sony fw900.. heh.
