Yep... this is a pointless thread... just look in the archives back to last year just before Jaguar came out... same issue.. same people crying about having to pay for an OS update... boo hoo.

I just believe labeling it a "point release" when really it's just a major "service pack" is just a blinding label.

I guess I can see their reasoning in charging for it, and I'll sure go out and buy 10.3, but I see a new operating system as something that truly earns the ability to cost $129+, not just an update of an operating system you've already purchased.

For example, from Win98 to WinXP, that's worth my money.

From OS 9 to OS X, that too, is worth my money.

But somehow paying the same amount for a completely new operating system as for a "update" seems a bit strange. Ah well, business is business!

BTW, I'm not whining a single bit, so please withhold flames, I just think that possibly point updates could cost a bit less than full-fledged new operating system.

coolmacdude

you sir, are an idiot. I do not advocate or practice piracy at all. I was merely pointing out the recent spread of piracy since Mac OS X 10.2 and people breaking their NDA's. Perhaps, it is because some products are open source and the new mac community expects a free operating system. Maybe the old mac users are tired of paying for each upgrade. I support Apple and the hard work they accomplish but I will not be upgrading due to lack of funds and a old iMac with 8mb of vram.
Next time use some logic.

If you don't feel that the update is worth the money, there is no reason for you to update.

A lot of people stayed at 8.6 because 9 wasn't really that big of a deal. A lot of people stayed with 10.1 because they didn't see the value in Jaguar. When I use a machine that is running 10.1, I thank myself for forking over the cash.

Wait for the update, see what people think. Then buy it or don't. Its not like anyones forcing you to stay current.

I think with all the featured that a rumored to be happening, 10.3 will most definitely be a pay upgrade and something that sounds like it will be worth paying for.

Count me in line for pre-orders.

Now we come to step three. This... drives... most... people... crazy.

I don't think it'll be a paid upgrade. Why? The pattern so far has been to alternate between paid and free updates (in classic Mac OS, major updates being in increments of 0.5, in OS X, increments of 0.1):

8.0: paid
8.1: free
8.5: paid
8.6: free
9.0: paid
9.1/9.2: free

10.0: paid
10.1: free
10.2: paid

so it stands to reason that 10.3 might be free.

10.1 came out six months after 10.0 and was basically marketed as the Mac OS X version for everyone.

10.3 will be a paid upgrade.

When I was running 10.0 on my Lombard the thought of paying good money for the 10.1 release was ridiculous. I got 10.1 for a penny which was a pretty good deal to me. It actually ran correctly and didn't make me feel like my Lombard was powered by a Dorito. I initially balked at the 10.2 upgrade being a paid update but then began to realize it made sense. The performance and feature increase of Jaguar was well worth the money even though 10.0 had not been. For people who had just bought copies of 10.1 at the full price I can see that Jaguar was a little pricey. I do believe however those people did end up with vouchers to get Jaguar at a discount, correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I think the main problem is people see Panther as a point increase in terms of version numbers. OSX is for all intents and purposes a new operating system. The 10.0 release could have been called OSX Beta while Puma had enough features and bug fixes to be labeled OSX 1.0. Along that line Jaguar easily fits into the role of a 2.0 product and it is likely Panther will easily classify as a 3.0 product. If you see OSX at a 10.x product then a x.3 version increment seems like a lot to charge for.

$129 works out to about $14/month with your taxes. You should just budget this every year for OS upgrades. You really only have to buy them once a year. Or you could move to Windows I'm sure you will find their pricing much more affordable muhahah.

For what Apple offers they should charge more. I know for my $14 every month of every year, I have a "killer" OS, it's stable, IT HAS A BSD command prompt for bob's sake!!!! Look how cool it is! Have you forgotten? Sure it needs things polished but DUDE you have full GUI access to all of this stuff. It's the only OS in the world this polished with Unix underneath.

I can't believe anybody would complain or start to whine or worry about it and lay awake at night "oh dear, oh my, I might have to buy the next os update"

I don't get it. People like you either pirate it or don't upgrade.

Don't start threads on this subject. Go start threads on a site about price, don't waste our time.

You have two choices. Buy it. Or Don't. That's how it works.

Even better for those who SAY they are broke follow these simple steps:

1 - Get a coffee can.
2 - Put 4 dimes in the can when you get home. (repeat daily)
3 - There is no step three... there is no step three...

Next year at this time you'll have more than enough money to get OS X 10.4. If you still have a problem then I think you should QUIT WAITING TIME ON THE FORUMS and get a 1st / 2nd job.

Dave

P.S. If you wanna fund .mac then find 2 more dimes each day.
