It has become impossible to download .dmg files that use Disk Copy (it downloads and then just stalls, or times out all together); and with other non-dmg files I will often get the message "The software to be installed requires Administrator or higher level access privileges.

Now, this happened a couple of months ago and I got around it by just logging out of my normal account (which, by the way, IS Administrator level) and logging in as root -- surprise... everything worked fine. Of course, this got annoying so I figured I needed to do a full re-install of my system (Jaguar).

Re-installing did the trick and solved all the problems. That was a week ago and now tonight I've encountered the same problems once more. This time I couldn't even get the root account to activate -- using NetInfo Manager it would not allow me to make a password at all. So that is strange as well.

So, to solve the problem I created a completely new user account with Admin privileges and that works fine. No problems with Disk Copy. But obviously this is NOT ideal.

And yes, I Repair Permissions regularly..

Thanking anyone in advance for a solution.

The other strange thing is that System Preferences "Software Update" has been likewise rendered inoperable as well, but likewise only for this one user account, not the other

How can this be? What in my system is being corrupted even after fully re-installing Jaguar (and I re-created my account from scratch, I did not re-import my home directory back over -- in fact the only thing I took from my back-up and re-inserted into my home account was my documents folder)
