I have just re-installed itunes and it finally works, and I have been able to install the ipod software with no problems. Synching has worked perfectly with the mp3 files already on the computer.
_My problem is that when I insert an audio CD the following message appears:
_"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore"

On reading another thread I created another user and I was able to access the CD as per normal.
_Any ideas on which file needs reparing or replacing for the original user set-up in order to avoid having to copy everything over

You may have an incorrect preference setting. Go to System Preferences > CDs & DVDs. At the line "When you insert a music CD", select "Open iTunes".

That is already set to 'open itunes'.
I've repaired permissions on numerous occasions as well.
And I've tested the drive using the hardware CD - no problems reported.
