Can I make OS X (Panther) create new User Home folders in a different location? (Specifically on a second HD?)

I have found the way to move a single user's home folder, but can OS X create new users on the second drive automatically?

There has to be a system variable somewhere, but I can not find it.

Thanks for any help.

I would try to create a symbolic link /Users which points to the other partition...

sudo ln -s /Volumes/OtherHardDiskName/Users /Users

(assuming the new Users folder is on OtherHardDiskName partition...)

Yep, moving the Users folder to the other drive and putting a symbolic link on the drive where the OS is installed is by far the easiest method. I've had my system setup that way for a long time now.

Speaking of which, does anyone do the same with /Applications? I would think it would work just the same, but would love confirmation from someone that already does it.

To answer my own question - no, you cannot do the same with /Applications. While it will appear to work, the first time software update tries to update an application in /Applications, it will replace your symbolic link with a new /Applications directory containing only the updated components.

Which is semi nifty, yet not very functional. Thanks for the info.
