Wright brothers weren't the first to do it. A New Zealander named Richard Pearse was.

The Wright brothers were credited with the first controlled powered flight.

Lots of folks flew in uncontrolled powered machines prior to that.

North Carolina tries to claim the motto "First in Flight" - and proudly proclaims as much on each and every automobile license plate. Nevermind that the Wright brothers were from Ohio and merely using a stretch of sand on the North Carolina coast for flight testing. Somebody said it best..."It's like crediting the moon for Neil Armstrong stepping foot on it."

PS, Ohio claims the motto "Birthplace of flight".

And I always thought that only applied to war-type situations, those cowards... !
