Look at apple.com:

Probably the only company in the industry that does stuff like that. Nothing about their own products on the main page.

PS: have mercy if this is timeline material.

That is very cool indeed. I remember them doing something similar after 9/11. With the Apple website being as popular as it is, this gesture is a great help. Meanwhile...

www.amazon.com

They've got a Red Cross image front and center of the home page. But Apple is really impressive - they totally eliminated any self-promotion on the front page items and just have individual links to aid organizations. Nice job, Apple, I'm impressed.

On a side note: how does one contribute to these organizations and know the money is really getting to the victims? I'm always hesitant to donate because I don't know if my money will really make it to the hands of the victims. Anyone very familiar with some of these groups, and have opinions of how they do business?

I just saw this myself this morning. It shows Apple as a company with compassion.

"Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense." Winston Churchill

That's all well and good, but the point was that Apple changed their main page and Microsoft did not.

I don't care what the Gates Foundation does. It would be a nice gesture if Microsoft did the same as Apple.

Remember Microsoft always lags behind Apple. It'll take em a few days to update their page if they are paying attention.

I'm very impressed with Apple either way. They took down the product ads from their site and have all charities and that takes a lot of class and compassion.

How?

I'm not saying its not a nice gesture, I just don't see it as a measure of their compassion.
