I need a good swanky lounge jazz CD, preferably one I can download off of iTunes cause I have a gift certificate and am in the mood right now. Something like this:

Swanky Jazz (Super Mario 2 Theme)

Any recommendations?

Look into Buddy Rich. Early 60's bigband lounge jazz/swing. Veeeery swanky; luxurious.

Check out Robert Michaels, namely his album called Allegro. Another noteworthy artist would be Norah Jones. Both of these artists produce music that's perfect for a small jazzy cafe. It certainly sets the atmosphere .

Here are a few of my favorites, though I'm not sure if they fit what you're looking for:

Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus by Charles Mingus. I also love the Essential Mingus Big Band by the Mingus Big Band, but I don't see that on iTunes.

Selections from The Village Vanguard Box Set by the Wynton Marsalis Septet.

You 'n Me by the Al Cohn - Zoot Sims Quintet.

A Night in Tunisia by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers
Safe in the womb of an everlasting night
You find the darkness can give the brightest light.

Touché.

There are a couple really cheesy ones in the free iDisk music too - ever listened to some of that?

I'd suggest Dave Brubeck's Time Out album, or if you can find it on vinyl, outtertimeinnerspace by Ahmad Jamal (I've never heard of it/found it on cd). But if you'd like to put together an odd but good swanky mix for a cd, here's what my suggestions would be (in no particular order):

Dave Brubeck- Take Five (Pick Up Sticks would be another good choice)
Charlie Parker- Ornithology
Chet Baker- But Not For Me
DJango Reinhardt- Confessin'
Frank Sinatra- Fly Me To The Moon
Javon Jackson- Peggy's Blue Skylight/Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love
Miles Davis- Summertime
Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey- Rhythm-A-Ning
Ella Fitzgerald- How High Is The Moon
Bill Evans Trio- Milestones
Glen Miller- Moonlight Serenade
Diana Krall- Peel Me A Grape
Lionel Hampton and Oscar Peterson- Soft Winds
Tuck Andress- Stella By Starlight
Lenny Breau- My Funny Valentine

If you really want to mix it up a bit, put on Warrior Jazz by Dillinja; Brown Paper Bag by Roni Size (and/or the full vocal mix of it); Jazz (We've Got) by A Tribe Called Quest; Loungin' by Guru; Conceptions by 4Hero; Here's That Rainy Day (Koop Remix) by Astrud Gilberto; or Diablous by The Cinematic Orchestra.

(Not that those have to do with the Mario theme.)

*edit*

A swank lounge mix I put together a little while ago went as follows:
Dusty Springfield- The Look Of Love
Astrud Gilberto- Here's That Rainy Day (Koop Remix)
Melanie Durant- Where I'm Going
Bjork- The Modern Things
Carly Simon- Nobody Does It Better
Buffalo Daughter- I
Suzanne Vega- Caramel
The Burt Bacarach Orchestra and Chorus- Don't Go Breaking My Heart
Koop- Koop Waltz For Koop
Lionel Hampton- Soft Winds
Stereolab- Velvet Water
Esthero- Anywayz
Billie Holiday- God Bless The Child
Telepopmusik- Love Can Damage Your Health
Diana Krall- Gentle Rain
4Hero- Star Chasers
Morcheeba- Undress Me Now
Suzanne Vega- Thin Man
Burt Bacharach- Alfie

And I'm just rambling music suggestions. Hopefully someone here will enjoy a tune or two from this list.

"Time Out" is great.

I also really enjoy The Bad Plus.

By the way, I really wish you guys would actually tell us who you're linking to when you post iTMS links. It's a pain in the ass to have to follow the link every single time.
