During a live concert, every musician (and especially the singers) HAVE TO have either speakers or in-ears to hear what the others are doing, and more importantly, what the hell they themselves are doing. On a large stage and, at worst, open-air, you CANNOT hear the other band members. Piping back an individually-tailored signal onto the stage is called monitoring.

If the backup vocals were completely off and they were fumbling with their earpieces (backing singers are usually hired absolute professionals), then you know that monitor sound was probably dead or really, really unusable. For vocalists, it can help a bit to put a finger in one ear. But in general, if that happens, singers are f*cked (the band can usually get just enough of the drummer to get through, provided they're lucky enough to hear themselves - problem for keyboards - or are expert enough to decently play "blind".

So anyway, either the monitor technician or some piece of equipment was wrecked.

Of course, her lack of talent may have compounded the problem.

It's possible, all three of them were fumbling with their earpieces and kept pushing them back into their ears. It sounded like Kelly Clarkson and her backup singers were singing two different songs it was so bad. Then Trace Atkins was hardly audible he muttered so quietly. Finally we were treated to Ashlee pumping her pelvis around while honking like an angry goose so badly I could not decipher a single word she was "singing". Even if the monitor feed from the mixing board was out or turned too low, you'd think they could at least wing it and sound halfway decent instead of that garbage my ears were assaulted with. Next year, get us some real artists with talent please.

No, next year bring back a REAL half time show. No one at the game wants to see any of this crap they're bringing in now. Ashleeee et al would've been booed even if they had been completely on their game - it's just not the kind of stuff you want to see during a football game.
