Legitimate tactic, and one that Apple's been following for years:

"If it ain't possible to do it well, just don't do it at all."

Every company PRAYS for a fad. Sales are sales. Profit is profit. A company with a fad sales rise does better than one that never really sees growth.

They can poo-poo Apple all they want. Right now, Apple is the Microsoft of MP3 players.

Isn't nice to be on top once again, Apple?

well, ipod is great

but 2-3 years from now and they haven't built up the Mac lines then they will have become exactly what Michael Dell is saying

As though they have the high ground as true trailblazers to criticize what they see wrt Apple. Give me a break! What they excel is in repackaging the pc while being at the cutting edge of inventory management. Anyway, these are the same guys who thought Apple will not last very long due to crumbling market share. Next thing you know they will say the same for the retail store idea.

Though I believe the success is due to a superior product, I am worried what will happen to the ipod when phones and other devices begin to have sizable hard drives. The iPod will have to add features (such as video) for it to be a long term platform. It will still be successful for the foreseeable future, especially if Apple is able to license its technology a la the itunes phone.

after see'ing the ipod and the ipod mini's success, dell shrinks their jukebox (full sized one), and also introduces a dj pocket? a mini sized player...

yeah .. it's a fad ... why the hell are they jumping in and copying the smaller formfactor of the mini then?

someone should point that out to him.

dell is in position to criticsize because they have found a very profitable business model

a lot of people rely on Dell because they need inexpensive computing at a decent quality (i would buy dell over emachine, gateway or lindows)

dell is going to be around for awhile because they do what they do. if i remember correctly, they used to sell the iPod at a decent clip and now i am sure they profit from their own crappy players. dell is going to be around a awhile.

i think Apple should look upon this criticsizm as advice and get moving on building their plan to show Dell who's boss.
