Can someone explain Paypal’s fee system?

I don’t use it very often and the majority of time I do it is to do sales or purchases through forums like here and Ars. I have never upgraded my account to Premier or Seller status and most of the time I only accept cash payments. As a result I have never had to incur fees from Paypal or using their system.

I recently sold something on eBay and for the first time the payment I received asked to be confirmed before accepting the money BUT it also gave me an estimate of the fees they were going to charge for the transaction. It said the payment type was, “Instant” which I am not sure if it means cash, bank transfer, or credit card.

My question is this, did the sender try to use a credit card to pay or is this something that Paypal does when you take payment for eBay auctions?

I found this https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/websc...g-fees-outside

But i don't know if that is only for upgraded accounts or if it applies to everyone who takes payments, even if they are in cash.

Personal accounts are not charged anything when you receive funds. A premiere account and bussines account will be charged $0.30 and 2.9% of the funds received.

So there is no way that I should be charged some odd $25 on a $700 payment if it was in fact sent as cash. He must have paid with credit card, correct?

If you have a personal account, then he can't have paid you with a credit card. You're not allowed to receive card payments.

It sounds like you don't have a personal account to me. The charges don't depend on how the sender paid, only on the receiver's account type.

I thought there was only 3 types of accounts. And since I have not upgraded to any of the others I have to have a personal account. And I did not aprove the payment so I never had the money. Paypal asked me to approve it which I take to mean that by doing so I would have had to upgraded accounts so they can stick me with fees from here on out.
