They had to give it up for the basestars sets. To me it was worth it.

Ok, I figured out how to account for the radiation field, the unusually dense starcluster, the odd-shaped starcluster that was too wide to go around, and why Galactica might be there.
Assume two stars had gone supernova, with a nebula in between. The two shock fronts would compress the nebula into a flat / wide shape, and seed it with unstable elements from both sides. You'd get a lot more stars being formed, higher gas & dust densities - and a very unusual location of interest to researchers.
The rag-tag fleet isn't focused on exploration & research, but it might be a good region to stock up on heavier metals. Such a location really would be of research interest. Supernovae are very rare, I don't think two have ever been observed around the same time and location in a galaxy. Also, the new stars formed would have unusually high levels of heavier elements. Many scientists in the fleet would go wild, and pull all the strings they could to get a closer look.
It's still unlikely for a food crisis to hit while the fleet just happens to be in such an unusual location. btw, I thought the episode was ok overall. Forgot to mention that earlier.

The entire show is filled with unusual things that are usually the result of a destiny laid down by the gods.

So where did the rest of the fleet jump off too? I thought they needed Raptors to help them get through radiation field.

Right, but they're past the radiation field. They're on the other side, so to speak. The reason why they had to jump through it was because it would've taken too long to go around it.

They most likely jumped to their "emergency coordinates" which are on the same side of the radiation field as the planet.

They've been doing this for a long time now, it's not like it's a new trend...

Wow that is the first episode I haven't liked since Black Market. It wasn't bad but the tension felt forced.

They're mixing units. They stand no chance against the Cylons.

I didn't like it much. I'm getting scared about BSG doing some shark jumping -- especially when they waste what felt like 15 minutes showing the Chief walking...and walking...and walking...and walking...

the starbuck/apollo thing seems a little forced. and boring. Unless they want me to like Anders and Dualla more, then well, it's working.
When they make characters stupid just to stretch a storyline, it's jumping time. Yes, I'm talking to you, Lost. Hope BSG doesn't make the same mistakes. I liked how Adama reacted to Roslin re the baby--he was pissed and there will be a conversation later. I'm glad there wasn't any stupid "adama was in on it" conspiracy theory, he went straight to Athena and Helo and gave them the info straight.
