UK newspaper, The Independent has uncovered data suggesting that Apple make as little as $0.04 per track sold. Apple operates iTunes in the US and Europe, which is the largest legal music download provider. The investigation concludes that because record companies are taking such a large percentage from online sales, many companies will go out of business within years due to lack of profits.

And only the RIAA wins. Yes, they're fine with that.

iirc, there was an interview with steve jobs and he said that what all these companies don't realize is that there is no big money in the music store. he does not mind the tiny amount they make off each song, since they sell so many ipods because of the store.

makes sense.

So how can Apple afford to offer 5¢ to people using Apple's iTMS sponsored link program? I guess because those represent such a small percentage of the songs sold?

I imagine that's a slight cut out of what the RIAA makes too... least I hope so.

That said, it does suck that Apple makes SO LITTLE money off it.

i think apple should sue RIAA for some reason and get some money that way

may be apple can claim that RIAA is being a diskhead and is not being fair and is hindering efforts to sell music legally, well you need to sue them to make more money so go figure some way to do that
