I just watched a video (thanks Mac Write) of Steve Jobs at Macworld Expo Boston 1997 announcing the partnership between Microsoft and Apple, and WOW, that was incredible. In order to fully enjoy and get emotional over the video, you have to understand the context.

The press was predicting Apple's doom for the past 2 years and the Mac faithful were loosing hope.

We didn't have G3s/G4s/G5 to blow the PCs out of the water in speed tests (although the 604 was pretty nice)
We didn't have cool looking computers like the iMac and super-sexy laptops like the Powerbook 17"
We didn't have Mac OS X, we had just gotten OS 8, and that sucked compared to Windows and Linux (no multitasking, no protected memory, no Aqua)
We didn't have iTunes or iTMS or the iPod to spread the message of Apple to the masses
No iMovie, no Garageband, no iPhoto, no Airport Express
No XServe

It truly was the worst time ever to be a Mac fan, and we were loosing hope, and doubted the future of our platform.

And here was Steve Jobs talking in such a low tone about his plan to rescue Apple, and it involved figuratively becoming Microsoft's bitch.

Wow what an awesome video that was. it was probably one of the smartest moves Apple ever made. Definitely one of the most important events in Apple history.

God Bless Steve Jobs I think many Mac fans have forgotten the gloomy past, and some of us weren't even Mac users back then. We should appreciate what he has done for this company and the Mac platform.

Steve won't be with us forever sadly, and the question arises, who, who could possibly fill his shoes? I hope it's not Shiller. We need someone who's as charismatic as Steve, and someone with his great vision. Let's hope that Steve chooses his successor wisely.

That was a scary thing to watch. Steve made a good point though when he said,"We have to let go of this notion that for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose."

Actually the situation with the PowerPC relative to Intel was much better in the 604e days, especially near the end. During those times, we had 350 MHz and Intel only had 266. Plus, the 604e had a clock-for-clock performance advantage.

I like the one Steve mention something about the software or the partnership.. something like.. if they didn't do a good job.. it's our fault.

Hey.. I joined the Mac world back in 1996 and I didn't worry about anything. Love to see the reaction from the crowd.

Apple needs to start work on a Robo-Steve, one that will never die and has the ability to absorb new Apple technology at will.

Plus, now he'll have a built in microphone and built in wireless connection, so you can stream video directly from his brain!

Thanks for the link!
Should be required viewing for every Mac fan.
I loved the way he let the audiences reaction go on and on and then said "We at Apple believe in choice"!

Case in point: Look how Apple's stock tanked when Steve went into the hospital for his recent illness.

We need a SIT. (Steve-in-training). (Assuming such a thing CAN be trained.).

I kind of rank Jobs up there with Edison and the like. His type is EXTREMELY rare.

I imagine there are some Steves-in-training. I'm sure Jobs would be absolutely and completely picky over who would be this person - unless he gets ousted by the board again, he will probably handpick who secedes him.

Will the next Jobs come from the league of Mac-heads out there? Will he be a more business-y type guy? I think that idea of Apple CEO tanked with Gil, though I could be wrong.

We need a holistic CEO.

I think I could do it... but how will Steve allow someone to try?

Actually Mac OS 8 may have saved the Mac platform by acting as a stop gap against Windows. A new feature in Mac OS 8 was pre-emptive multitasking. It wasn't true multitasking, but it allowed applications to do more than one thing at once. It wasn't until Mac OS 8 that you could copy a file while you do other things. Mac OS 7.6 had no multitasking whatsoever. If you were, say, copying a file you could not do anything else on the machine. Only one action could be running at a time. Compare this to Windows 9.X which always had pre-emptive multitasking (only NT had full multitasking).

I think you are referring to cooperative multi-tasking.
Windows 9x only had pre-emptive mt on 32 bit apps. 16 bit apps still acted cooperatively.

errr.... no.

Macs back as far as System 6 had multi-tasking. It was a cooperative multi-tasking, not a pre-emptive multitasking, but it worked reasonably well, allowing you to run several applications simultaneously.

Pre-emptive multi-tasking was introduced on the Mac with Mac OS X, NOT 8.

Cooperative multi-tasking WAS true multi-tasking. It just wasn't pre-emptive multi-tasking.

I think maybe you're getting multi-tasking confused with multi-threading. It is multi-threading that allows a single application to do more than one thing at a time.

Eg, Finder could have one thread copy files and and another thread empty the Trash.

Fraid you're wrong on both counts.

http://www.pearson.ch/pageid/34/arti...Technical.aspx

"How Mac OS 8 exploits preemptive multitasking to perform many operations concurrently"

System 6 also did not contain any multitasking whatsoever. What you're probably thinking of is MultiFinder. MultiFinder allowed you to run multiple applications at once, and was built into System 7 eventually. I spent long periods of time on System 6 and 7 waiting for it to finish tasks because it could only do one thing at once. Multiple Applications at once != MultiTasking. MultiTasking is the ability for all the apps to be doing several tasks at once. For example, Under System 7 I could not play write an email and perform a copy at the same time. On System 8 you could.
