So I'm buying a couple of couches and everywhere I go the salespeople want me to pay a hundred bucks to add some sort of Stain Guard crap. Is this stuff really necessary or is it some sort of crock, like "undercoating" on a car?

I'm thinking it's a crock, but I'm getting conflicting reports.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I've always been of the opinion that it is basically a crock. My feeling is that it is more like an extended warranty than any sort of real protection, since they often tout the fact that if you can't get a stain out, they'll (eventually) replace it. Of course, the one time we got the stain protection, we couldn't get the furniture company to cough up the dough when it did stain.

It's pure profit for the seller. Don't buy it.

If the fabric was high quality - it would already have stain repellant.

I would suggest you buy a couch with removable, machine-washable slipcovers. If somethings spills, you can just remove it and toss it in the machine. No need to use nasty and expensive chemical cleaners

Yes it works but you can buy Scotchgard in aerosol cans and apply it yourself for much less.
