So somebody who sits at my station at work got a nasty piece of adware/spyware/scumware on the beige box three of us share. A quick Google search tells me "Bargain Buddy" / "CashBack" is a common piece of this crap and I've since removed it. Bargain Buddy put a naseating little dog icon in the System Tray and it popped up ads whenever you used (surprise) Internet Explorer.

I was surprised that right along with a bunch of stores I've never heard of, travel scams and Canadian pharmacies was The Apple Store.

Does that mean Apple has paid to use this a-hole service or are they putting The Apple Store in there to make themselves look like there are legitimate vendors among the BS?

As a Mac user for the past 5 or so years, I'm kind of naive about this whole adware/spyware business and this is only the second time I've seen it. How do the people who come up with that sh!t sleep at night? And to hell with people who actually click on that stuff -- or worse yet, buy from them -- thus justifying its existence, because it "works."

LOL - I guess I didn't get it all. After posting the above, the words "adware" and "spyware" are highlighted in a way I've never seen before... With brightly-colored hyperlinks. Ugh. What a F*cking mess!

he didn't "get it", he installed it.

see if this helps to get rid of it>

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

PS, you need to fix the root cause of these types of problems to keep them from happening again. Disable the user.

The "he" you reference is a "she," BTW... And she got very defensive when the issue was brought up to her before. I wish disabling the user were an option. I'm not the administrator here and the person who holds that title is generally clueless. We're still runnin' Windows 95, if you can believe that. I guess you can't care more than your boss.

I would love to. You hiring?

And "this place" is one of the biggest media companies in the world. Whether you know it or not, you're likely exposed to the sh!t that comes out of here every single day. It is sad.

if spybot did not do anything, try adware and see what happens.

install firefox on her pc and then ask her to use that instead of ie.

They might make money based on clicks to an advert agency that Apple contracted, or perhaps it's an associate program or something.

Probably like how with google adds you can make money by having them click on a site... etc.

I highly doubt Apple wanted to promote adware on PCs... although it'd be a good way to get people to move to OS X... but if they wanted to do that they'd just start a subsidiary that sold viagra

Uhh, is USA Today a relative?

Besides, CCI is there, right? Best pagination system there is, and not cheap. If only they'd us it on a Mac platform.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

Not Gannett, although they're a major presence here... With the only major daily and the dominant TV station in town.

Without giving it away exactly, I work for a division of Westwood One, part of the CBS/Viacom monolith.

At home on my Mac, everything's better. Ahhhh, too bad if I stop going, they'll stop sending those checks.

<office space>

I don't like my job and I don't think I'm going anymore.

"But what about your bills? How will you pay your bills?"

I never liked paying bills. I don't think I'm going to do that anymore either.

</office space>

If only.
