Comments on the debate?
I think it was pretty tight.. nothing to be excited about...
both parties were good. Kerry is better in his speeches and Bush is constantly trying to find his words but it's OK....

Hello exiles.
If the most conservative folks here seem to think it was even or Kerry had a slight edge, I think I know what that means. But we'll see tomorrow and a few days from now how people react to it.

Keehee.
I'll just repeat what I said in the political lounge:
Kerry schooled Bush.

Kerry was lying out his lower orifice about not flip flopping.
WE know better. That hurt him.
He needed to have had a way to explain his flops. But instead he denied it.
His "Because I was a solider" silliness popped up too many times in examples not relevant.
That is hardly "Schooling"
Again they both did a good job. I would give Bush the lead. But it was a small one.

He denied it because he didn't flip flop on the war.

Of course not! And he told the complete truth about his war history too.
He flipped flopped like a fish out of water.
Now I can understand why Kerry would lie to save his own butt.
But for someone else to be in denial.. that makes no sense.

Apparently a lot of people are in denial because a lot of us don't think he flip flopped. The position he stated tonight is the same as the one he stated in 10/02 and the same as the one I've heard him state all along.

I didn't really get a chance to watch as much as I would have liked, but from what I saw Kerry got smoked. Too bad too, it seemed easy to nail Bush on certain points and Kerry just bobbled around them. Oh, well, I like Bush better anyways.

I've seen it and I don't see the flip flop. His complaint all along has been about the process, not whether Saddam was a threat. That's clear from his words after voting for the resolution and from what he reaffirmed tonight. Did you even watch the debate?

I think this is locked already... you're banned for a reason dude. That doesn't mean you can start political threads in the regular Lounge.
That said, until it's locked I may as well participate. I thought a 90 minute debate on one single subject was rather boring. OK, they talked about homeland security a little bit, but that's directly related to the War on Terror. Between the War on Terror and the war on iraq, there wasn't time for anything else, apparently.
And I also thought that neither candidate took the debate. Each side has their reasons to think their candidate did a little better, but agreeing with Zimp, they both did as well as the other.
I did think it was funny Bush said (as the Washington Post transcribes it), "Of course we're after Saddam Hussein -- I mean bin Laden" While I realize it was an honest mistake, one could almost read the subconscious behind it.
[edit] changed my quote. I had the wrong line, same thing though, just forgot where it was.

How long is Ambush and Zimphire punished? Hopefully not too long, right?

Bush got put on the defensive early on and stayed there until nearly the end of the debate.

I think a lot of you are missing what any of this means.
People have a very short attention span. By the third debate all of this will be forgotten and that last debate is the one that may matter. The people who have not made up their mind by this point are not people who are politically engaged. Most of those people weren't watching tonight and if they did it was only for a little bit to see if ER was preempted. They will get their synopsis of tonight's debate from half hour news shows and Jay Leno because paying attention for 90 minutes bores the hell out of them. Yes Kerry did better tonight as a whole but those people who will decide the election will only see the highlights of both men. So since neither man delivered anything decisive or made any major gaffes I doubt tonight will make much of a difference by November. Everything tonight was too well rehearsed to make a real difference by next week the numbers will go back to where they were this morning.
I personally think that the debates are going to be a non-factor in the end. Other things will decide this election, not the debates. That is barring a huge f*ck up by one of the men on TV Howard Dean style.

Historically, that hasn't always been the case, but we'll see.

I think debates are very important in close races. Of course they won't matter for people who are already steadfast in their views, but not everyone is.

You shouldn't really have to look that hard..
Did you even watch the debate?
Of course I did. I said I think they both did equally well. But Kerry did lie about not flip flopping.
He is trying to prove the "If you say it enough, it becomes true"
The "want to believers" will be the first victims.
Next thing you know, you'll be coming in here claiming Kerry is married to Morgan Fairchild..

Why don't you show it to me then, if it's not hard to find. A couple quotes should be enough.

And I believe I said then you weren't watching close enough. Which you really don't have to do because it's plain as day.
I fear no amount of "showing" will change your mind. I cannot help you.

And that doesn't cover half of them.
