For some reason it sometimes doesn't show up. I blame the pbase.com linkage. However, if you view the gallery page directly (instead of a linked image) it always seems to show up there.

Eug, you got some great shots there. Thanks for posting them.
I am excited, and have grabbed a copy of the hallway shot listed above (sorry, Spikey, I liked Eug's better as well) to show some friends and family who had asked me about my travels a few years ago...
I didn't have a camera w/me on my journey to Europe, and more specifically, Rome. When I returned back to the States, friends and family hammered me with questions about the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, etc... "Was it beautiful? Tell us about it.", and all I could say to them was that it was sensory overload (IMHO). This shot in particular seems to perfectly describe that sensory overload I was talking about.
The artwork is so overwhelming... too overwhelming for me. I really couldn't wait to get out of there.
Thanks again for the post.

Man, Eug, you have good eyes and steady hands. Beautiful shots that make it easy to relive my short time in Italy.
I have had my D70 for about two months, but have barely had time to really use it and relearn SLR ways, let alone features specific to the D70, before I took off for a week and half in Paris and London just a few weeks ago. I shot almost four gigs' worth of JPEGs and RAWs of photos and could sense that I was improving with each day, in both operability and familiarity of controls of the camera and with my own shooting skills. These are great cameras regardless of model, and certainly the end result depends very heavily on the photographer, again, regardless of which camera. I would like to share a few of my photos some time...when I ever get to working on them.
Thank you for sharing the what you see, man.

Heh, no. Thanks for the compliment but most of the pix I took are with the EF-S 17-85 IS lens, which has image stabilization. The lens is only OK in terms of sharpness and contrast, but the 5X zoom range and the IS still makes it my primary lens.

Image stabilization? I am certainly in need of such a feature. Do you know off hand if Nikon camera or lens(es) has this feature?

Heh, I didn't even notice it the first time I saw the pics as the cross grabbed my attention in that area of the pic.

What exactly is your gear? AFAIK the 17-85 mm lenses just came out ...
I didn't have the type of change to go for a D-SLR with interchangable lenses, I opted for an Olympus E-20 instead. Quite a difference compared to the `push this button and die' cameras.
Just browsing through your pics, the quality is really good.

Canon EOS 20D
Canon EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS <-- used for about 95% of the pix
Canon EF 70-200 f/4L
Taken with 17-85 IS, at 85 mm:

Wow, that's a sweeeeeet setup. You're damn lucky I'll have to wait for some more years to get a new D-SLR, but on the other hand, I just bought mine half a year ago
Enjoy, I'm sure it's a nice camera (I haven't laid my hands on a D20 yet, I have just seen the predecessor D10).

Heh, the camera drug has hit me hard. I'm contemplating buying yet another lens, this time a macro lens. Maybe the 100 mm f/2.8 Macro USM from Canon, but that's another chunk of change I could probably put to better use...
And another pic:

Were these shots handheld? If so, then I really need to look into the stabilization lenses.
Or a light Gitzo tripod.

The night shot of the castle above was not handheld. I put the camera on a ledge for that shot. Everything else was.
In fact, I didn't even have a tripod with me. I did have a Gitzo carbon fibre (light) monopod with me but I couldn't use it anyway for many of the shots. (The guards inside museums wouldn't let me.) After the first few days I didn't bother carrying even the monopod with me.
EDIT:
BTW, I managed to take this shot handheld at 1/15 sec, with the lens at 85 mm.
Give me 1/30 s and I could handhold it consistently, which is about 2 stops of handholdability.
ie. 85 mm x 1.6 (since the 20D has a 1.6X crop sensor) = 136
Using the 1/effective "focal length" rule, it would need about 1/125 for consistently sharp pictures handheld. However, I only needed 1/30 with IS active. 1/125 vs 1/30 is two stops of handholdability.
I just happened to be lucky this time to be able to take the shot at 1/15.

i've been very pleased with my sigma 180mm f/3.5 hsm macro. of course, you already have that focal length covered, but the field of view from the 180mm makes for nice bokeh in macro pics.

Yeah, somebody recommended that to me and it seems like a good value, given the quality vs. cost. However, it's quite a large lens, and still costs significantly more than the 100 mm Canon macro USM.
And to think I was originally just looking at extension tubes...

great pictures .. they look fantastic. many would make great wallpapers. question. using a regular camera (such as a canon sd200) what can i do to make pictures look better? Taking them at max resolution and then resizing? if i take a pic at 1024x768, and a max resolution one that was shrunk down to 1024x768, which would look better?
also... wow .. again .. fantastic shots .. one look and i could tell they werent ordinary joe shmoe snapshots .. it has a professional air to 'em ... good work

I always take my pix at max rez and then shrink as needed. I also use Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) to clean up the pix.

Thanks, I was wondering what the sign said.
The assumption by others I've talked to is that she is a gypsy, which may or may not be correct, but I wouldn't know. It's a stereotype of course, though.

Well, he got 8 MP to choose from
No, seriously, always take pictures at full resolution and then scale down. Even when you need more space on your memory card, either get a new one or choose a lower quality at the same resolution if possible.
I have 2 128 MB cards and I can put approximately 84+85=169 5 MP pictures in normal quality on them. Don't ask me why my CF cards takes one picture less compared to my SD card, but it does
