Well MacNN is reporting rumours of a flash based iPod... or rather MP3 player... granted all they've said is Apple is buying flash mem which could mean a camera or something also. So the question is, if there were an iPod that was smaller and lower capacity than the mini... would it be iPod tiny? Or perhaps they'd go with the angle of it's entirely skip proof and designed for jogging and what not, so they'd call it iPod sport? I've always wondered why Apple seems to be the only music player makers who doesn't have a SPORT model.

My guess is the flash one would be the iPod mini. After all the current iPod mini is just an expensive iPod with a ridiculously small HD and a heftier price tag.

nice new sig storer. yeah i read this too ... i wonder ... if it's a flash drive .. i dont see how you can do the ipod interface ... i dont think they will do well with camera's .. it's all about reputation and lens right? apple has great rep for interface and style .. but they have no experience with optics ..?!?

thanks... I have had this one before. i am changing them every week. i will come up with a special 1000 post one soon.

on topic, the iPod didn't have a reputation initially. They might bring out a camera for normal people, not photographers. Like for families and stuff, who are the main consumers. i only want 4-5 MP, nothing super for our family camera.

EDIT: i was just thinking then. a camera would mean software. it would mean we would have to see iPhoto for windows (if it was to be compatible) but i think we will see an mp3 player.

still i highly doubt camera. there are plenty of canon, nikon, pentax, sony, minolta, olympus, casio ... consumer digicams 3.2-5mp ... competative price, good optix, solid reputation. apple cant crack it .. as far as i can tell .. =(

That would be the perfect way to rip someone off;

"here is your new iPod." "oh, they're small. i can't even feel it. thanks."

Great, rip them off apple

A flash iPod doesn't make sense because flash based Mp3 players are going out. If they make one it will have 2 b cheap. Like $150 or less AU.
I'm just wondering when Apple is going to start a new branch, like it did with iPod.

I mean a whole breakout line. But anywho, the company supplying the flash said it themselves; its being used for a flash based music player. i don't know whether or not to believe though, because apple legal would kick their asses if it was true. as if they would let a release clue get out that easy.

Crap, darn you Fred!

Yah, I HIGHLY doubt Apple would go with a Camera, just stating it. I do not think there will be an iShot any time soon, the iPod was a reaction against the lack of decent MP3 players on the market, and their even worse support for the Mac. So Apple blew everyone out of the water. Canon, Fujifilm, HP, Pentax, Kodak, Minolta, essentially all the traditional camera makers are still doing a good job with the digital camera. Unless Apple started selling HP cameras by Apple I wouldn't understand it. And from what I understand HP ones use Pentax parts (though I heard that from an untrusty nerd do don't hold me to it.)

That said if Apple came out with an aluminum 4 megapixel camera that matched my PB... I would buy

I was thinking it would be used in the next generation apple mouse, you know the one with two buttons. When a song plays, it vibrates to the beat and when you hold the mouse up to your ear, you'll hear the song.

I can't see Apple dropping the wheel otherwise it will look like any other MP3 player. Not to mention they will have to tweak the interface.

i dunno where they could put a wheel and make it much smaller than the mini, since the wheel basically doubles the height of it. unless they put it on the back, but that'd be kinda weird.

I could see wheel behind the screen. That said I don't think the iPod sport would be smaller than the mini, if anything it'd be bigger than the iPod. Remember people who buy SPORT products are looking for something that looks durable and ugly. Apple would have to put coloured plastic bumpers on it.

It wouldn't be that weird... I came up with this design a while ago for the ipodlounge.com ipod of the future contest (i don't think thats the right name... but it was something like that).

About the iCamera... I doubt this would happen, but all you guys need to quit mentioning the crappy brands as having "good reputation".

The good ones are: Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Fuji, Olympus, and *maybe* Sony, Casio and Kodak.

Kodak's pro digital models are great, but the consumer models are just OK. Minolta used to be great until they started shipping everything to 5 different countries to make it. Nowadays they suck. All there stuff is so poorly made people would buy a camera and be back the same day to get it replaced because it was broken/malfunctioning already.

HP and Panasonic are both crap. terrible terrible crap.

You guys forget the wheel is what makes the iPod. It's not just the storage.

The wheel will not die. It might shrink a BIT, but not a whole lot.

That said I would not be surprised at all if they shrunk the screen a bit, put it and a wheel on a bluetooth controler and stuck the HD in a set of larger ear eating headphones.

That said, I was just trying to scroll around back, hypothetically with my thumb, and a half scroll wheel on the side of the device might not be such a bad idea. Think about it. Yes it's not as great as the full scroll wheel but if it wasn't THE iPod but rather just one of them it might be a nifty idea. That said I'm not sure how you'd FF hahaha. And it's not very lefty friendly.

Check out Canon. less than 1 inch thick, aluminum ... i'm sure you'll find their new sd line pairs up well (sd200 lined up for me!)

what about an apple cell-phone/pda?

i think the first rev would be a POS. but it'd be better than that treo 270 i had for 1.5 years. my God!

oh, i don't really want one.
but, what the hell. i'll throw it out there.
this was the first thing that came to mind... phone you can interface with address-book/ical/mail(blah!), well crap, what about iphoto/keynote too!
and if it played mp3s well duh itunes.

or maybe it'll be an ipod/pda or cell-pod or camera/pda/pod/cell.

the possibilities, well they are finite.

Would you really need a Click Wheel with only a small number of tracks?

Maybe they have come up with another great 'user interface' (tactile and visual) that works well with 50-100 tracks.

They could put the display on the headphone cord / remote, and just have a click wheel on the unit that would make it easily less than the mini size.

I think a 512Mb flash player at the right price and great style would sell will.
The iPod brand is so huge now that Apple can start to move into the cheaper areas.

If they can get an iPod micro out for $100 - $120 then they will sell.

It's probably going into the current iPod Mini shell. a 1 gig flash based iPod Mini that sells for $150 bucks or less would be a huge hit.

I never thought of that, but that's true. They could have two different versions of the Mini, just like there's two different versions of the regular one. One with lower capacity and longer battery life, and one with more storage but a shorter-lived battery. Maybe they could start using the new 5gb microdrives, too.
