Thought it might be interesting to see how many languages members speak.

I speak English and French and read German. My French is okay, my German is pathetic.

English is the primary language, though. I have a feeling that some of you speak a lot of languages fluently!

In addition to English, I can write Hebrew fluently, and can speak semi-fluently (to a non-speaker, I'd seem fluent, but to a speaker, I wouldn't).

Already been done before.

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=146968

That said, I know the following:

English (native) - speak/read/write fluently
Greek (native) - speak/read/write fluently
Spanish - speak fairly well/read easily/write with some difficulty
German - speak OK/read with some difficulty/write with great difficulty

English and Greek are both native because I learned them at the same time all people learn their native languages... growing up as a baby and also going to Greek School as a child.

English is my first and only language, although I tend to butcher Japanese every now and then. I had a few years of Spanish in high school which comes in bits and pieces once in a while.

I speak both English (second language) and Spanish (native language) fluently, or at least I like to think I do.

English (primary, though I was born in Germany), and enough German to stumble my way around.

German - (mother tongue)
English - fluently (my gf just told me my German accent is breaking through again, noooo!!)
Japanese - intermediate level, got addicted, though, plus my gf speaks it, too
French - forgot a lot, but I can understand more than I can say
Spanish - my French helps me to make out the meaning quite a few times, but basically it's zero. That's about to change though, as I will have a personal teacher hopefully soon
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

English, I think I'm fluent.
Hebrew, I can read and write, and I can speak a little. I'm by no means fluent, although I once was.
Spanish, I can read and write, I can get around, and carry on a conversation, but I'm pretty bad (in my opinion. Others say I'm decent).
Russian. I can say yes, no, thank you, and shutup

I took a Russian class last year. Cool language.

I think my order of languages will be first to become fluent in Japanese, then learn Spanish since I have the foundation from high school, then take on Russian. I hope in life I can afford to do it.

I'm a Japanese translator, so I guess you could say I speak it...

I've studied Chinese, although I don't really speak it. Same goes for Spanish.

English, Okay in French but I can't write. I did Italian at university as well as German (and at the Goethe Institute). I would love to speak German I think it is my favourite that I have dabbled in.

English - fluently(at least almost)
German - read fluently, write and speak OK.
French, Spanish - can read and understand what the deal is though I'm not good at it.
Norwegian and Danish - understand fully because of the Swedish I know.

Planning on adding Arabic soon to the list.

One of the things that sucks about growing up in North America the lack of languages, I am somewhat envious of the Europeans because of this difference.

I have always gone to private Jewish school so I learned it there. I also spent a year in Israel after high school studying and volunteering. I also go back to Israel when I can to volunteer and that refreshes my memory.

Hmmm, we've been here before methinks...

Anyway:
English - fluent (I hope)
Afrikaans - fluent (grew up in a mainly afrikaans speaking town)
Dutch - more or less fluent (lived there)
German - fluent
Swiss-German - fluent
French - pretty good (father and step were both French speaking)
Spanish - can get by pretty well (worked in a bar in Spain)
Turkish - rusty (when I worked there I could converse quite well but its 11 years ago now)
Can read and undertand quite a lot of Swedish and Danish (Strangely not Norwegian well although it's very similar)
Can fight my way through Portuguese and Italian texts and get a basic grip on what is meant.
weird wabbit

English, first language
Spanish, family's Spanish, but it has Mexican influences growing up in the Southwest. Used to be able to read and write fluently as well, but am so out of practice on it.
Mandarin, can get around in many of parts of China, though my diction needs vast improvement, especially blending a Beijing/American accent on it.
German, can get around on it, ordering in a restaurant and other basics.
Thai, a little less proficient than German, but can still string together a few words here and there.
French, about the same as Thai.

As far as learning, I really want to improve my Mandarin, and I'd like to learn some basics in Malay and Japanese.

Are you fluent in three languages as well as German, Polish and Latin? Because basic understanding of a language is not fluency.
