if you follow this:

http://kcp.codepoets.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6479

"Microsoft has a form on their website that you can fill out to get a copy of Windows XP SP2 on CD at no charge (with free shipping by Purolator).

I ordered one.

Then, at the Order Confirmation screen, I clicked Back, then Refresh, then Retry (since the form had to be posted again). I did this 149 times.

I got 150 order-confirmation emails.

At this point, I figured the monkey sticking the labels on the envelopes would get really familiar with my name and start asking questions, or that they would get wise and send me a box of 150 of them.

So you can imagine my surprise when I get a call from Purolator saying "we have two huge bags of envelopes here for you, please come pick them up at the depot on Grant Timmins Drive".

So I go pick them up this afternoon, and the poor counterperson has to scan every single one of them. After they were all opened and put into one bag, here's what it looked like:

They were even nice enough to thank me for my order over and over again! Which is amusing, since considering the cost of the CD ($1), envelope ($1), and shipping by Purolator ($5 with a huge volume agreement?), this cost Microsoft...

Drum roll, please...

$1,050.

While I'm at it, I might as well share the bounty. Do you want one of these? If so, drop into KCP and pick one up; I left 120 of them there with Thomas. Smile And buy something while you're there!

Does anyone dare me to put in 3,000 orders? Twisted Evil

I was limited to 5. I don't need them. I just want Microsoft to pay to send them to me.

I have Windows users around me anyway. I'll give 'em out.

[edit] If you change your e-mail address, it lets you submit it 5 more times. Haha. And since my mail server supports suffixes, I just add a "-#" to the end of the e-mail and submit again. My college post office is gonna have a fun time when these arrive.

I'm gonna make some kind of art out of the CDs when they come.

Does anyone know someone in Afghanistan who needs their XP SP2 CDs? Or someone in American Somoa?

Let's see... the American Embassy probably needs some!

"Microsoft limits the quantity of Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD-ROMs that may be ordered by a single customer to 5 CD-ROMs. Please note that 1 CD can be installed on several computers running Windows XP, and can be shared with others. Accordingly, you may not order more than the 5 CD-ROMs limit."

Should still get my 5 though

Neat! Someone should write a script to automate the process and go through the yellow pages/phone book. After all 90% of the users need to patch!! Anyway, the next spammer with an addy in my email gets some.

i_rooster: you should have made sure you got all 150 and weren't short-changed.
Even if you did get all of them, you should call customer services anyway and say you only got 147.
Having said that you're probably on their blacklist already.

if you own a domain that has a catch-all email account, then you can put in any email address at your domain and it will go to the catch-all, so you can do that as many times as you'd like.

cool idea, rooster.

As I was saying, my e-mail account supports address delimiters (can't think of the actual name off the top of my head) so I just hit back and entered xeo-1, xeo-2, xeo-3, xeo-4, etc, etc, and actually got the confirmations from them all. Pretty cool.

Wow, now the poor students working at the Gustavus Adolphus College post office can deal with your many Windows CDs.

Maybe you should drop them off at the IT department, and address them to 'Bruce.'

(For those of you who don't go there, he's the IT department head without a clue. IT policy was to never give him the root password to anything, because he may try and use it)

If I didn't already have a few dozen coming, I'd start addressing them from MS to Bruce here at the school. Imagine his surprise if one day the post office sent him e-mail saying he has 50 packages and they all end up to be SP2.

50 to Bruce, 50 to Joyce, and 50 to Tammi. That'd be totally funny. Seeing how we get a new virus warning every damn week. (I like how at the top they all say something to the effect "This e-mail does not concern Macintosh users')

You should give one to a friend of mine who lives at GAC. Do you know an Indian guy named Kiran by any chance? He could probably stand to update his computer, because knowing him, he saw it in Windows Update and said "F this."

OK, those of you who are ordering multiple copies just to "stick it to the man" are ****ing stupid.

Do you think the IT directors will use those discs? No, they'll put them straight in the trash.

Is it costing MS much? No, they don't give a crap, they'll just write it off their taxes and save money in the end by claiming they're being charitable by giving away a CD worth $20 for free and write that much $ off the taxes.

Instead, who pays the bill? The environment. The plastic to make the CD. The packing material. The fuel burned in shipping of all the raw materials. The fuel burned in shipping the finished product to you.*

You should all be ashamed.

I ordered ONE disc because I use XP Pro in Virtual PC.

Yeah, could you stop destroying the environment already? I think it was satire. Of all the things to whine about, all the millions of people buying or burning CD-Rs every day, the ordering of multiple Microsoft Service Packs on CD is obviously on top of the environment concerns list.

That is one of the stupidist things I've heard in a while. People here are just having fun screwing microsoft but they should all be "ashamed". How come moderators can say ****ing, and call people ****ing stupid, while everyone else cannot? That's ****ing stupid. And I think tooki's ****ing stupid for doing that. And I can't get banned for this, because if I do so should tooki.

But you're not screwing MS. As I said, they're probably making a profit on this.

You gain nothing, MS wins, the taxpayer loses, and the environment loses.

How would they be gaining from shipping out more than needed CDs and paying the shipping?

You gain nothing, MS wins, the taxpayer loses, and the environment loses.

You gain nothing but a laugh on a message board, MS spends more on shipping, and the environment probably doesn't care about the infinitesimal effects of a CD-R.

I stand by every word I said.

Well, more power to ya, even if it doesn't make much sense in the grand scheme of environmental issues to throw a fit about it. And use a nasty curse word, of all things!

This nonsense of ordering CDs that aren't needed will affect the environment -- they will take up space in land fills.

Exactly. If you are that concerned about environmental issues, go protest styrofoam cups or target oil companys. I hardly think a few cd's, or even a few thousand will make any damn difference at all. This is not even close to an environmental issue which is why I was saying it is retarted to say the people should be "ashamed" becuase they are dooming our planet by filling up our landiflls with CD's. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I don't buy it. How can this be counted as charity? They are offering to send out CDs so that when some virus comes out that could have been stopped by SP2, MS can avoid responsibility by saying, "we offered the update to everyone, even those without broadband." I highly doubt this could count as a tax writeoff.

Lighten up.

Charitable does not primarily mean "promoting a charity". It means benevolent or generous.

They could say that they are giving away discs worth $20 (they can invent whatever resale value they want) and say they're an expense, and thus subtract them from revenue, thus reducing tax liability. Believe me, they've got accountants who figure out how to turn everything into a loss, as far as tax liability is concerned.

I still believe it's reckless, irresponsible, and incredibly juvenile to think you are doing anything positive, from any point of view, by ordering more CDs than you need.

Actually, MS and most major companies keep spend a lot of money avoiding taxes in general, and the whole deal with CD worth $20 is a drop in the bucket. Honestly, do you think MS is really concerned about taxes? Most major companies claim their company headquarters in a state that has friendly tax laws, thus avoiding a lot of taxes. Apple does this, IBM does this, MS does this. Honestly, do you think anyone pays taxes in those big companies?

Oh, sending lots of CDs to my college IT department or a dumb techie on campus isn't 'sticking it to the man' (the man always wins), its a joke to our dumb college IT department. If you lived through network shutdowns and tons of 'update your windows install' e-mail every week, you'd want to send them a joke package also.

Chill dude, chilllllll......
