RedmondMag.com claims to be the leading independent voice of the Microsoft community. They just ran an article encouraging people to look for alternatives to Internet Explorer. They mention the usuals: Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, & FireFox.

In a subnote, the author mentions Safari as a "vastly superior... browser," only for the Mac of course. Also mentions that the security problems inherent to Internet Explorer just aren't there for the Mac because it's not integrated into the OS. Think he's on to something?

Thank God, I never though I would see the day.

It is sooo pathetic that Microsoft hasn't updated the damn thing in THREE YEARS after they thought they won the war.

to be fair though Netscape 6 sucked worse then IE. It still does but firefox etc are good minus the Java.

The problem with Java on IE is that as developers, we have to write all of our Java code to be compatible with Java 1.1, which is a royal pain.

What I mean is that Java just works in Safari and not in Omniweb, firefox etc...

On Windows or on the Mac?

You can't on Windows. It's an integral part of the OS.

On the Mac, you just delete it.

You need IE for Windows Update, and Active X stuff, but after installing a clean install of XP SP 1 on a computer at school, I found 20 new viruses in a week in IE's temporary internet cache, I hate IE.

This either means that a) they've been working on it inhouse for a while now to make sure it can level the playing field or b) they've completely dropped the ball and they are now running around with their pants down.

Knowing Microsoft, it could go both ways.

When people ask me how to avoid viruses I always say 1) buy a Mac or 2) download firefox.

You'd think companies would do this to avoid massive tech fees, unless thats what the techies want!

I recently had to reformat my girlfriend's laptop (as it had 95 and a bunch of crap on it). Updated to 2000 which is worlds better than 95 and 98. I also made sure to put FireFox on there and keep any IE links away.

First thing I see when I check on what she's doing, she's surfing in IE and the icon is right on the desktop.

"I tried putting an address into FireFox but it said 'could not be found' "

Ugh. At my work we have to keep Internet Explorer on the machines for the web classes because two of the teachers keep telling us "Netscape isn't compatible with anything." I keep telling them that that was a problem 5 years ago, now we have Mozilla and FireFox. Even Netscape 7.2 is fine since it's built off the 1.8 source.

We went as far as removing Explorer from all the cocks and putting up Safari, Netscape, Mozilla, AND FireFox.

Then for the first 10 minutes of the classes all I hear are people complaining about how slow the Macs are and that web browsing on PCs is soooo much faster. They're back using Explorer again with 30 popup adds minimized into the dock.

Every semester we beg to remove Explorer, but the professors won't have it. I can't stand it. I think next semester we're going to tell them too bad. If you can't make an HTML/XML compliant website, you have no business teaching the damn class.

It does help to keep Explorer around, as even today there are some incompatible sites - eg www.odeon.co.uk . All you need is for a PC-using friend to find one site that doesn't work with Safari and they go on about how crap Macs are and how they don't work with anything... annoying.

Yeah, but Mac users do the same with PCs.
