http://news.com.com/Cray+begins+sell...l?tag=nefd.top

Cray is selling a single rack cluster for $50,000 with only 12 Opteron processors.

For $50,000, I can make a 28 CPU G5 XServe cluster.

Wow, those 12 processors better be made of solid gold...

"The XD1 systems use Linux and MPI, but replace the commonly used Ethernet network with a very high-speed interconnect that directly links processors and memory with the Opteron HyperTransport technology, Cray said.

"It provides very high bandwidth between the nodes and very little latency," or delay, said Steve Scott, a Cray chief architect."

For CPU and memory intensive distributed computing applications, that setup would own your 28GHz G5 "cluster".

Uhm... you guys realize these aren't just PCs running Linux, right? The inter-CPU communications is much more advanced than your typical PC.

I'm not so sure a 28 CPU XServe cluster could beat the Cray. It's possible, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Cray was faster.

It'll probably just surf the web, anyway. I wonder how many pop-ups it can handle.
Do you want forgiveness or respect?

I'd be interested in seeing the results.

My G5 cluster is using fiberoptic interconnects, so it's no slowpoke, but it's definately not 1:1 ratio from CPU to CPU. The G5, however, has the advantage of AltiVec. If you're doing gene resequencing or simulating collisions, it wouldn't surprise me one bit that my cluster would beat the Cray.

If you're saying it depends on the application, then yes, you're 100% correct.

You're better off with SGI, a Mac blows, hard, compared to one
Who, or what actually won the US election? Intolerance. The Bush campaign was built around pushing God down people's throats; attacking Gays; and more Guns for the idiotic. Gays, Guns & God. Congratulations, you just participated in one big joke.

See, it's not funny because he's not running, and actually he is more sane than the four people that are!

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.
