Seems every month you hear about the latest and coolest movie was made using off the shelf PC's with linux that cost 10x less then SGI machines.
SGI has been losing money left right and centre for ages and the stock is worth $1.35.
http://news.com.com/SGI+warns%3A+low...bj=news.1003.5
Do they have some sort of unlimited cash supply that allows them to stay in business?
Who still buys these things?

People who want and are used to to the SGI software and workflow I guess. Plus as I understand it the SGI machines have slow CPUs but are designed around bandwidth, which may be more important in a lot of this type of usage.

If you want a thousand cpu super-computer, SGI is your man. If you want to do high-end film compositing not matched on any other desktop computer, SGI is what you want.
Try doing what Flame on an SGI tezro can do, on a Mac or PC and you're buggered. Still, it's not enuogh to keep them going me thinks, which is a pity since their computers are some of the best around.

You have got to try one, quad cpu's, a system bus that, well, it's beyond anything you can imagine. Running Discreet software churning out more than 50 layers of film rez material in real-time, too cool. It blows the fastest Linux versions out of the water.

God knows, but I think it's downhill for the SGI of old. Linux/Altix systems, and Governmental/Scientific contracts seem to the ones keeping them alive.
Irix is need of a boost, as well as MIPS. Shame.

Canadians and Brits spell it center in this context.
Centre means a place or organization. For example, a call centre or shopping centre.
Center means middle. Left, right, and center.

Wrong. It can be "centre" in both instances, and indeed, that is the spelling I use for both.

Looks like I may be wrong for Brits, although that entry isn't that specific. But Canadians use center for middle, and centre for a specific place or organization.

I doubt that this is true for Canadia(sic) in general.
You wouldn't find that in BC. Of course, the mix of English and French towards the east will result in such bastardized English

Not quite. Most people I've spoken with suggest sticking with one group of spellings. ie. If you use "centre", it should be "centre" in all contexts, unless it's the name of an American organization or something.
Similarly, one should not use "honor" and "colour" in the same article.
We tend not to use "practise" though, and generally stick with "practice" (which is also correct).
Check out this article:

SGI owns Alias, the makers of Maya 3D. They probably get all their money from that.

Yeah, they sold Alias for pennies. I think SGI might be in trouble soon, again, with their choice of going Itanium. We'll see.

Younger writers are relying on spelling checkers that are often either British or American which adds to the confusion.
15 years ago, this wasn't the case. I was taught that centre means a place/organization, and center is "middle". I still very rarely see it vary from that in established and older publications, only in online postings, and areas where there is little editing and proofreading.
But yeah, when it comes to language, we're confused.

I use SGI machines regularly and Irix is a rock solid Unix, fast and stable and the graphics architecture is second to none. That said, SGI is a company desperatly in search of a niche. They'll never be the huge player they once were.

anyway, I think SGI's will be the 'other' architecture, that was really ahead of it's time, and no one ever took as an option (because of the price tag).

That's a nice machine, the Octanes are brilliant little performers, Octane 2's still are. We've got a few here running Flame, and I can't imagine dong half of this stuff on any other computer.
Tezro's are cool, mainly for the bandwidth, but to be honest, an Octane 2 still does the job in most cases. Funky lookin critters though, the Tezro, lol.

Used to work in the life sciences/biotech industry - and they were extrememly big there. Most of the computation software for doing analysis (blasts?) were written for the SGI. The company I worked for had a couple Origin 2000's and all of the scientists/bioinformatists(sp?) had O2's on their desks. Of course, this was about 4 - 5 years ago...

This thread is now about the English language. I'll raise the level of discussion here by adding that George Bernard Shaw left a large sum of money in his will to fund the advancement of a 40 letter English alphabet.
So there you go, something new for today, that plus the English use 'centre', and SGI make really, really fast computers.

The days of expensive proprietary hardware are long gone. Since then, the world has all agreed on one standard. The IBM PC compatible. With the world's fastest Intel Pentium 4 at almost 4ghz, and powerful 64 bit processors like the Athlon64, proprietary platforms are simply a thing of the past.
With the world's standard opearting system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional - you are able to edit movies, capture video, and render 3d objects much faster than ever before. Yet you can run your games AND use Microsoft Office XP Professional edition!
Microsoft Windows with X86 based processors is the standard. It's the future as well.

You do realize your posting this on MacNN??
Anyways, SGI boxes rock. I've used them at the university computer lab years ago when I was a comp sci. student in college (was taking a computer graphics course that involved using MAYA). If I could afford one, I would have one.
x86 sucks. Windows sucks. Bill Gates is ugly. Steve Ballmer is fat.

I remember those little blue oxygen systems. People liked them but they were not that fast for the time. They were also really hard to upgrade as you could easily fry the thing.
