Anyone know any good, dependable proxy servers I can put in system prefs? My school network blocks deviantart for "art/culture", macupdate for "high bandwidth", and various game sites I like to visit for entertainment, which is very irritating.

And also, if this is considered illegal or something, let me know, cause I don't know anything about proxy servers, other than the fact that they could potentially get me past the school's filter.

Are you sure you are not looking for *mirrors* of these sites ?

I don't know how proxies would help you...

A proxy woulld just shield your IP from macupdate... it wouldn't let you bypass the schools' filters.

Try this place. Most of them work, but also have problems with SSL.

Good luck

My preferred method:

ssh -X -p 80 username@myownlinuxserver
konqueror
OS X: Where software installation doesn't require wizards with shields.

no the filters are generally on port 80 and 443. proxies will forward the ports you access to your computer through another unfiltered port.

I used a friends machine with CCProxy installed. if you know anyone on a cable connection and are willing to help you out ask them.

Also if it's at a college see if you can use an AOL account on their network. if you have an AOL have it connect through the network. AOL caches the pages and services you request to their closest server then feeds it to you so your connection feels faster. I have a friend still stuck at the college that restricted us and that's what he does. the web filters see it all as AOL content.

I don't know if you mean cgiproxy but if you get a computer running CCProxy it will. we had all ports on my friends computer forwarded to our computers on the school's network through port 22 the one that is normally used for ssh.

I think he's referring to getting around the censoring at a high school. If so, you can do something like setup CGIProxy mentioned above on your home computer and then access it from school.

This is kind of ironic but all of the sites you guys have suggested are blocked on my school's network. Can you post the IP address and ports?
