"Apple Is Rotten"

It's an amusing anti-Apple rant.

Think different, like me!
"Think different?" I've always found this key slogan in Apple's marketing to be troubling, and not just because it shows that CEO Steve Jobs needs to brush up on his fifth-grade grammar. (Hey Stev-o, buy yourself an adverb!) It's creepy and ironic because Mac fans -- especially the ones who write me -- are about as freethinking as the lovely ladies of Stepford. They're like a pack of Moonies telling a congregation of Snakehandlers, "You're brainwashed. Join us to free your mind."

Americans have always preferred their rebellion in commercialized and socially acceptable packages -- witness GM's Hummer H2, Harley Davidson motorcycles, or the Mullet -- but wake up, people! Leaving a $300 billion monopoly to support a $15 billion one does not constitute intellectual daring.

Well, aren't we? I know I am. I just wish this cult came with hot, easy chicks. The Mormons totally have it made with polygamy. Maybe I'll become a Mac-using Mormon.

It was a two part commentary; one anti, one pro.

Who gives a flying fsck about "intellectual daring". The point for trading one for the other is that the output of the $300 billion monopoly consists to a large degree of unsafe, productivity-decreasing shite, whereas the $15 billion monopoly puts out a halfway decent product. "Intellectual daring", my behind.

"Taking measured steps toward dominating a market is how Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) came to be 20 times bigger than Apple."

Some of us don't use Macs to get away from Microsoft, believe it or not. After all, there is Linux out there for the new breed of "Think Different."

The first article makes the same WRONG assessment of the iPod that lots of WRONG pundits have made. Saying that Apple should open it up for use with other vendors to grow the market share.

In case nobody has noticed, Apple can't keep up with demand as is. If Apple can only make 900,000 iPods in a quarter, then they can only ship 900,000 iPods in a quarter. Expanding base right now is a dumb idea. If it brings in 2 million more buyers, then 2 million more buyers will be waiting for iPods that Apple is currently unable to produce. Apple should stick with its current strategy for now. When their sales have leveled and they start having excess capacity to make iPods then (and only then) should they consider "opening up" iPod and iTMS compatibility. Until that time, they're doing a good thing by building as big a brand/platform with iPod/iTMS as they can.

The ipod will go the way of the walkman in time, hopefully Apple has another great product waiting in the wings for when that day comes.

The article was interesting, but ignores the value of Apple's brand which I think is very strong right now. Some doubts about Apple's ability to sustain this are healthy, especially if you're an investor in the company. At some point, Apple's going to need to capitalize on that brand in a more substantial way than selling a trendy item. Eventually there will be serious competition to the iPod. Apple was the first to do the mp3 player right, but there's too much of a market for them to be the last.

I use a mac because I prefer to and the cult aspect is just an added bonus. Is there a Dell user group anywhere?

Linux is a bit cultish too. I think it just happens with underdogs. some of the best loved sports team are complete underdogs but they always seem to have a moment when everything goes right. then the cycle starts all over again.

Quoted from pro article:

"And that's good news, because they have deep pockets. Pollster Harris Inactive says Generation Y -- kids and young adults born between 1981 and 1995 -- has more than $200 billion in annual disposable income. They're only going to earn more as they get older."

Damn. I missed the gravey train by 3 years.

Oh well, go go generation X!
