Simple question....

Nintendo DS:

-decent 3D capabilities (think N64+)
-innovative user interface elements (touch screen & voice)
-Amazing wireless capabilities (802.11 and proprietary(30-100ft))
-relatively long battery life thanks to no-moving-parts media
-Lage library of existing GambeBoy and GameBoy Advance games.
-No extra bells and whistles...just pure gaming
-Coming to market end of 2004 (U.S.)
-US$149 price tag.

Playstation Portable:

-extremely powerful 3D capabilities (think PS2)
-traditional user interface, nothing new
-descent wireless capabilities(802.11 and Irda)
-shorter battery life due to rotating media (estimated between 2.5 - 10 hours)
-Relitavely small library when compared with NDS's backward compatibility
-Music and Movie capabilities.... i'd like to call it a home theater system to go.
-Coming to market in early 2005 (U.S.)
-US$299 (link)

PS: if any of the information above is incorrect, let me know. Cheers

The PSP is the better choice because of the huge range of games and the incredible screen. The thouch screen on the new gameboy doesn't seem to be as innovative as one could hope (it certainly didn't impress much at E3)

Too bad they didn't go with Bluetooth instead of Infrared though..

I'm sure a lot of people are waiting to find out what the battery life is like before they commit. If it has a 2.5 hour battery life and a battery pack I can swap out, I could deal with that I suppose. Though I'm rarely away from a power point for 10 hours or more anyway. I'll probably end up getting one. Just for GT4.

You do realize what you just said there don't you?

GB SP Launch Titles include all of the GameBoy Advance and Color games and while PSP has potential to have a huge library (I hear it's easy to port PS2 games to it), I haven't seen the final list, and it becoming available later (thus longer for development houses to get more games going), I still don't think that the PSPs library will get near the GameBoy SP when they run head to head.

I am 22 and it would look bizarre for me to have either, but I would choose the PSP most likely.

the majority of my gameboy playing time is while on a plane, traveling, or sitting in airport departure lounges. i am not saying i want 24 hour battery like my gameboy advance sp, but anything over 5 hours will be fine with me. most of my flights are international, but i can't sit for 8 to 12 hours playing gameboy. so 5 hours of a flight is more than enough.

i hope you do not mean because you are too old? i am 24 and i'd sit anywhere playing gameboy. i normally get to school about 15 minutes before my first class and i sit there playing gameboy.

I second that. I am 30 and play GBA SP a lot, I find it nicer that try to play on computers, about the topic, straigh to the DS

The larger screen and analog controller is a big deal for me. I hate how small my GBA SP's screen is. I'd rather play with the adapter for the GC.

As for the "vast library of GBA titles" marketing line, please remember that you CANNOT play with a link cable on those games; it's single player ONLY.

Potentially both (I'll try out the PSP and check out the games). I'm definitely lining up for the DS when it comes out, though. Don't know what game I'll pick up with it at first (probably Mario 64 DS), but at least I'll be able to play Metroid Prime Hunters for awhile.

And it should be clarified that the DS will not play Game Boy Color or original Game Boy games. It plays GBA games only (no multiplayer).

Yeah the gb will have more games, but i bet the PSP will have less "kids" games though.

Holy crap.

The DS will play all GBA games. That pretty much starts it off with a massive library aside from DS-only games. More people seemed to like the stylus than not—at least, from the reviews I read. I'll reserve judgment myself, but overall, I've read mostly positive things about it (in MPH and other games). And the DS will use proprietary 802.11 wireless, not infrared.

And yeah, the PSP has a big screen. So what?

Well I can't help but feel the prospect of playing wipeout in full 16*9 is a little more sellable than "Yu-Gi-Oh!: Nightmare Troubadour" with a stylus.

I like the look of the DS, but I haven't spent money on any sort of console in ages. They're just to pricey for what you get. Perhaps once I'm done college I'll get back in, doubt it though.

Well, i finally got my hands on a Nintendo DS today.... played it at the local EBGames store in a mall.

Opinion:
Pros:
-it feels really light
-the screens are really bright.
-Graphics looked awesome.
-the sound quality is adequate...i'd use my headphones with it.
-overall it looked smaller in person than what i had imagined.
-ive played my friend's original gameboy , GBA and GBASP(never owned any of them), and i havent really gotten used to the controls of any handheld, but the DS's touch screen when used in Metroid Prime Hunters, feels really comfortable, when playing the fps.
Cons:
-It 'seems' kinda big for it's weight. it feels like there is a lot of empty space inside, which they could have trimmed and made it look sleaker.
-the design does seem kinda clunky..... but not ugly.
-the 'side' buttons seemed kinda.... out of place.... just felt weird.

i played it using the 'thumb strap' , and i think....after playing it.... it would be safe to say that this touch screen interface would be best used for item selection (think Zelda inventory), trackpad for fps (think MP:Hunters),trackpad to countrol a cursor on the upper screen(think of my Day Of The Tentacle proposal), maps, sports game strategy (think Madden) and display of stats (like during online play), or even like a rear view for racing games. I wouldnt use the touch screen for detailed precision control for like buttons when the action is going on on the top screen.

Overall, im impressed. there's definately a lot of potential for something new....the DS reminds me of a laptop, shrunk down to be able to carry around relitavely easy and used primarily for N64+ gaming , coming fully equiped for multi player, and an easier control scheme for 3D games.

Actually, i think the touchscreen/pad is almost a necessity when it comes to 3D games. i mean, i dont think it's a coincidence that Nintendo chose to include it when they decided to bring 3D gaming to the portable space.

Cheers.

After owning a DS for a while now, I'm starting to get a little tired of the typical small screen that Nintendo uses. There's no reason why they couldn't make it a little bigger. Playing Super Mario DS on it is not nearly as fun and easy as playing it on an N64. Hell, it would cost less to get a used N64 and SM64 than to buy SMDS alone!

Lik-Sang, which is the best, cheapest, most reliable place to get it imported from. You should do a little more reading and less whining.

Sorry I didn't think you would be retarded enough to import it when it comes out in the west in 5 weeks for much much less.

Thanks for proving me wrong on that one.

Nope and you still haven't even though there have been posts asking when.

Make something up quick as since you haven't said a peep about actually getting it anywhere it sound like you just ordered it.

That is what I thought, the answer is retarded the rest of your post is just the usual avoiding the question.

Hey waste your money if you want, I don't care. If you get that upset over a simple question and reply with your "whining" post than it shows you are sensitive to your purchase.

The simple thing to have done was to say "I paid more for it to import it now rather than wait 4 weeks as it is that important to me". I wouldn't have cared. I actually thought you ordered it from the US and some rip off store was charging almost double, in which case I wouldn't ever order from them.

Rather you had to act like a baby and avoid the question. Which even now you STILL haven't answered and it turning more ironic with each of your posts.
