i lost it tonight. main prob was spacebar, then next you know, all of the keys go to sh1t. i'm now typing my woes via keyboard viewer. god damnit, these apple keyboards better be cheap. it took forever just to take the bloody thing apart. i tried removing the stain from the plastic circuits, no luck. anyone want to donate me one... sigh...

If you spill anything in your keyboard, the first thing you should do is unplug it from the computer. Take it apart and clean and let it throughly dry. You can easily repair you current keyboard by using a circuit trace pen or an auto rear window defroster to reconnect the circuits that were fried. I've done this several times, and stop drinking next to the keyboard!

If you don't care about it matching, you can always get a generic USB keyboard:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...127&depa=0

That one is $5 plus $5.55 to ship it. About $10 total.

<offtopic>You could always put a little strip of tape over the Windows key and draw an Apple and command symbol on it </offtopic>

Here is a new set of a white Apple Pro Keyboard and Mouse on eBay for $47 currently:

There are others on eBay too, so that might be a good way to save a bit on it.

I spilled half a cup of coffee on my pro keyboard. Unplugged it, drained the coffee out over the sink, let it dry. When I plugged it back in it worked fine. I didn't take anything apart.

a few years ago a glass of milk was spilled on my ms natural keyboard. we turned it over, drained all the milk out, but would not work. so we threw it in a cupboard. about 3 months later i found it, plugged it in, and it worked perfectly fine

Apple keyboards aren't that great... they're wayyy too expensive for what they offer. Get a logitech keyboard. They're 100% mac compatible and are much cheaper than the apple ones, additionally they've got more features than the apple keyboard, like the ability to completely control iTunes with dedicated keys, open up your homefolder (or any app) with the press of a button, etc.

Demo: I have an IceKey here that has never been used. I bought it under the stupid presumption I could bring an old iMac back to life.

They retail for $60, but I'll send it over to you for $30/shipped via PayPal.

If you're interested, PM me.

After 3 months, I'd think the smell would be gone. I'd hope. That smell makes me gag.

the_glassman: Thanks for the info about a circuit trace pen. I didn't even know such things existed. I currently have 2 pro keyboards that are fried due to family spilling things on them. I can tell which circuits are fried inside but never thought to just reconnect them. I'll buy one and see how it goes.

It's exactly why I'm anxious to have iSkin for my keyboard.

Put it in the dishwasher, on the low setting and in the upper basket.

Wow, I thought this thread was history! Thanks for the help everyone. I tried to remove the stain on the circuitry but it's imbedded into the plastic. I'm interested in your offer Hanks, but I'm afraid to say that I'm really broke at the moment. I miss using fast key shortcuts. (Plus the ability to type words without using this bloody mouse!)

Yes he is, and it works but if you don't let it dry completely or you're not careful you could do more damage then good. I wish I could find the supplier for the cell membrane that apple sells, I doubt it could be purchased separately. Seems kind of stupid to get rid off a whole keyboard over an easy to replace cheap membrane.
