I have a G4 as my main computer and a 15" Alu Powerbook. I'm about to buy a G5 and I want to keep my faithful G4. It's an AGP G4 upgraded with a 1Ghz Sonnet card, 1.5Gb of RAM, a Radeon 7500 and two 120Gb drives. I would like to use it as a file server for my music, photos and videos collection. I would also like to use it to render After Effects projects in the background when I'm working on something else on the G5. After Effects has also a distributed render engine, so I could use the G5, the G4 and the Powerbook to render the same project.
I know that after using the G5 one hour, I won't be able to stand the G4 noise. So for the fun of it I would like to make the G4 quiet and more compact.

Any tips or hints?

Thanks

Hmm...short of finding quieter fans, I'm not sure there's much you can safely do (as in, safe for the components). You might just want to stick it in a closet and use VNC to control it when you need to.

Yeah, if it's a particularly full closet (or a very small one), I'd pass on it. If it's a bigger closet that's not too full, though, it shouldn't be too bad. Just so the hot air has somewhere to go.

these don't apply to your G4 I think but they may give you an idea...

A closet would be great. Or a basement. Something cool and out of the way. Having lived with 2 b&w G3s in my room all summer, its a warm and noisy time.
