Okay, so I've had SBC yahoo for a year, with a shibby price of 29.99 a month.... but now, since it's after 12 motnhs, they jacked up the price to 49.99. ****ing lame. I'm cancelling on monday. Oddly enough you can resign up now to get a lower price of 26.95 for 1.5 Mbps.... I'll let you guys know how it goes.

You can also just call them and renew for another year contract at $29/month.

You have to renew for a year to continue getting the lower price. They tell you that when you sign up and also send you e-mails reminding you when your year is up...

Pffft Verizon is $29.99 per month, I'm pretty happy with them besides a few things that they pull (block port 80, etc...) I wish I had speakeasy access in my area, would sure love to have 6.0/768 access for $100.00 a month!

I wish that Surewest Broadband serviced apartments, because they offer 10mbps/10mbps lines for only $49.99 a month! The only restraint is:

Up to 40 Gigabytes of unidirectional throughput monthly, calculated on inbound or outbound usage, whichever is higher

I've thought about cancelling my SBC DSL altogether simply because both of my neighbors have unprotected wireless.

That sounds like pretty good service, but between the bandwidth up and down, I'd be over in 4 or 5 days. Do they have an unlimited bandwidth option?

I don't recall, and I just quickly found that info at their site.

I love that it is 10mbps both ways, sure would make things a lot smoother for me and my roommates. Right now, if someone starts using bittorrent, and doesn't cap their upload speeds, loading websites gets all bogged down. They only count either up or down (not both) towards the 40GB limit. So say one month you had 30GB uplaoded and 39GBs downloaded, you are ok, since your highest figure is only 39GBs.

Thats pretty awesome. Wish it was offered in my area. I guess Verizon has rolled out a 3.0/768 service for $40 a month, I'm going to call and check into it tomorrow.

1Mbps/1Mbps for $50/month. $40 with 1 year contract, $35 with 2 years. Only a few limitations: Popular P2P programs like Bit Torrent, Gnutella, Kazaa, etc. as well as web servers are limited to 10K/sec. But at least you can use them.

40 GB? My cable ISP has a 6 GB bandwidth limit. Of course, you can up that limit to 10 GB by paying $45 a month instead of $30. They also prohibit use of NAT routers, because they want to charge you for each machine you connect to the service.

The bad part is that where I live, I really have no alternative except dial-up...

Well, I got a speed increase for the same $26 a month. Good. Bad is that the freakin' customer service people were ghetto southern african american people I couldn not understand (because they wouldn't speak up, not because of the accents), who hung up on me when I asked where they were located.

Ouch, on good nights I've been known to download more than that!

Yeah, I know, but in case they do somehow find a way to detect a NAT router, I don't particularly want to get charged with cable theft. If they were able to do it way back in 2002, they'll still be able to do it now.

But you write shareware software. You depend on capitalism to make money from your sales. Why do you want to support the software piracy that attempts to undermine your own business?

Interesting. I had no idea they could or would check for a router like that. Just like one of the posts from that Slashdot story, how could they make their money back by checking?
