So, I have just moved from Europe to Canada. I had initially planned to bring my Series II Land Rover with me but then decided against it. Shipping was too expensive and the Landy just isn't much fun on long distances. So it got sold.

I have always driven old cars, read 20 years and above. I don't think I've ever spent more than $4000 on a car and I am planning on carrying on with that tradition.
My current favourite is this car, two owners from new, very well looked after. A lot of car for the cash.

I very much like the old Mercs, but as I am now in North America I would quite like to explore what's available from local manufacturers. Any suggestions? No SUVs please. We're quite active people, so we need space for camping gear etc. We like travelling, so the car needs to be good on long distances. It needs to be stylish, but not cost more than $4000.

Suggestions?

I'm wondering, with your criteria, how you'll do better than that Merc.

70's cars are generally very cheap to come by, regardless of their often great condition. I could also pick up an excellent Saab or Volvo for the cash but am wondering if I am overlooking something made locally.

mid or late-1980's Jaguar XJ6

These are commonly available for about $5,000 US

Parts are reasonably priced (via mailorder) and they're easy to work on.

You really don't want a North American car, do you? All the big, roomy ones tend to suck. Get a Cadillac, at least. Something with a 32valve Northstar V8.

I used to drive one of those - loved it. Fast, luxurious, a brilliant drive. I was worried that parts would cost a fortune in Canada. I shall investigate, thanks.

Drive a bunch of them. then make up your mind. I think an old subaru legacy wagon would be a decent car, especially in the winter.
