Does it work? yes
Would I use it? no
I have the Spymac Wheel account, and i have had 2 mail outages. Both were for days at a time and one caused me to lose a lot of my mail, and never receive some of it. If they can't keep it reliable for a paying customer then I wouldn't rely on the free account.

But as for your original question, when it's online I can access it from Thunderbird just fine.

Thunderbird should work fine. I have no problems using mail.app with my spymac account, it is concerning that they had an outage, this would explain some e-mails I haven't received however, apple has had problems like this as well and their service is far more expensive.
