For those who have 1/2/3g ipods, and are interested in trying something a little more interesting than the standard iPod OS, I'd like you all to check out iPod Linux!

http://ipod.homelinux.com

Chances are good you've heard of it a while ago, and some of you might even know of the OS X specific 'build' I used to distribute to make life a little easier. For a while though, I didn't keep up the site, had too much work, and didn't get a chance to update it.

Well, it's back, and better than ever - The October build is now up, with new features thanks to leachbg and the rest of the gang at the iPod Linux project (hey, I only package this!). The menu system is now actually useful (MP3 playing that works with the itunes library *GASP*, 4 games, a JPG/GIF viewer, a text viewer, and some other goodies), and increased usability (can reboot into the normal iPod OS).

On that, I might as well mention the project is (as always has been), in great need of developers. With something like this, there could be all sorts of programs for iPL, and you could do far more with the iPod than Apple ever dreamed of!

Anyway, there are a few caveats: 1. Firewire networking doesn't work yet, and 2. While it shuts off the hard drive during periods of inactivity, it doesn't put the ipod to sleep, and 3. The MP3 player has no volume adjustment..

For a project that's had so little manpower behind it, those issues will soon be fixed and well, it's come this far!

So I'd encourage you all to take a shot at it. Running the installer only takes a double click, and it's a dual-boot setup! You'll still have your Apple OS available by default -- holding down back/rewind at bootup/reboot will start iPod Linux.

If you do decide to try it though, don't forget to back up the contents of your ipod! While I've tested the installer/uninstaller a few times, there's always that chance something may happen (in which case well, this is at your own risk, please be advised!), you should still be able to restore your ipod if that happens.

The install process though requires no formatting/reinstalling of anything to/from the ipod though.. and it'll still be recognized/sync in itunes/isync/alladat

So do try it out, questions and comments are welcome!
Aloha

You're the man... this sounds awesome. I'm at work so I can't try it right now, but the last version that was out for like a month didn't work on my ipod, it just said "cannot read firmware version" or something... I hope that was fixed... i reeaally want to try this.

edit: p.s. the site seems down

The version you're speaking of is slightly different in that it's an actual GUI installer -- mine is only terminal powered -- BUT it only requires you to type one thing and hit enter

If you encounter any problems with the site you can PM me your email address or IM me at OoTlink and I'll beam ya down the file

ah, cool... i'm at home now...

install worked good, but upon reseting into linux I get the penguin head and the scrolling bucket of text, but it stops at this:

Command: modprobe ts
b43aa82
Using /lib/modules/2
.4.24-ipod0/kernel/a
rch/armnommu/mach-ip
od/tsb43aa82.o
ipod_1394: $id: tsb4
3aa82.c,v 1.4 2004/0
3/02 23:18:38 leachb
j Exp $

Any Ideas?

I have a 3G 15GB with minor scratches on the backside

thanks

At the time it wasn't plugged into anything, and you gave it a moment or three right? Odd I know it can take a minute or two to load sometimes, especially the first time, but it shouldn't have hung there.

I would have said rebooting, but I'm sure you've already tried that :| That or I'm too tired right now to answer this right, heheh.

I'll check over in the mroning and see if mine took that long to load, or if maybe we should ask about it on the forum muwahah

Sorry about that!
