I was thinking earlier about things people buy online. I could not come up with a single thing that people must buy online. What do you think are some things people can only get online?

Us baseball fans outside the US get to watch baseball. For example, I now know why Steinbrenner needs to throw obscene amounts of cash at Carlos Beltran.
I guess that's kinda like porn feeds for me.

I don't think it's what single thing you can buy online I think it's more the options and the ability to truly do comparison shopping and get the best price.

I purchase a lot of media online (books, cds, dvds, software) that is difficult or impossible to buy locally. Sometimes a local store will be able to special order an item for me in more time (and often at a higher retail price) than it would take me to receive an online shipment. Sometimes what I'm looking for (particularly with the imported stuff) won't ever be available locally, even via special order.
Apart from that, there are lots of things that are not regularly stocked at my local stores that are easy to locate and readily available online.
It's hard to get the iTunes Music Store to work offline. eBay doesn't work that well in offline mode either...

(sorry double post)
For convenience sake, sometimes it just makes more sense to order something online.
If you live in a well populated area, than yes, you can buy almost anything without having to shop online.

I usually order books from Amazon because they have books I wouldn't find otherwise, have better prices and arrive in 2 days with free "super saver shipping".

Books I buy locally... I live in the middle of boston... lots of bookstores
Music is over the 'net as is any computer component that I need (well, except for the rare object that my college bookstore has really cheaply)

Interesting ideas. I came up with the same thing on the comparison shopping. When I build computers for people, I guess I do check around to find the best prices on the parts. Anything else pop out in your minds?

I rarely ordered anything when I was in the States, but it's a godsend while being abroad for any length of time. The ironic thing is that it's not what you have to buy online, but how much easier it can be to order online and how that mode of shopping has mostly silently improved.
That said, I've never bought anything from eBay. Bid on two or three things before, but never made a transaction on it.

I live in a frickin' huge city and there's tons of stuff I can't get anywhere but online. I can imagine it must only be worse for people not in big cities.
Some things I can think of off the top of my head:
* My PDA is a European import (Clie TH55/E)
* PDA accessories from Brando in Hong Kong
* Shareware for computer and PDA
* Books not sold at Barnes & Noble or other local stores
* An ordinary but very specific flashlight that I and everyone else at my job wanted
I only buy online as a last resort, because I like the instant gratification, but I buy a lot of stuff online, and only rarely is it because I can get a much better price.

I buy practically everything online - clothes, electronics, cigarettes, cleaning supplies, software, etc. The only things I don't buy online are food/alcohol and toiletries.
The reasons why I buy online:
1. Anything I buy locally has an IL state sales tax plus a Chicago sales tax which comes out to about 10%. Buying online is almost always cheeper than buying locally.
2. I don't drive (having a car in a city is expensive and a pain in the neck) so having merchandise shipped directly to me is convenient.
