Here's an email correspondance I just had with the head secretary at work. I am in charge of finding them new, cheap 17" LCDs for their Dell POS boxes. Simple, right?
Here's a black one that just showed up - it would be $255 shipped.

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...ion=24-021-013

Nick
reply 1:
HI NICK, I THINK THIS ONE SHOULD BE FINE. I CAN'T BRING UP THE PHOTO THOUGH. CAN YOU HELP ME. I'LL BE HERE PROBABLY TILL 4-5:00. OTHERWISE CALL US AT HOME. MY HUSBAND SHOULD BE UP AT 6:00. CAN IT
WAIT TILL THEN?

THANKS NICK!!
Her outlook broke the link after the '24'.
my reply:
Just copy/paste the whole line below into internet explorer. nick

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...description=24
-021-013
10 minutes later:
HEY NICK. I CAN BRING UP THE WEBSITE FOR EGGNEW, BUT IT SAYS THAT THERE ARE 0 ITEMS THAT MATCH YOUR CRITERIA. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

THANKS
me:
Yeah, copy/paste the ENTIRE link. You're forgetting the '-021-013' at the end. nick
response:
I SWEAR THAT I'M COPING THE WHOLE THING AND PASTING, IT'S STILL NOT BRINGING UP THAT ONE. SAYS "0" ARE FOUND. SORRY. SHOULD I TRY SOMETHING ELSE?
I just re-sent her the last email. 15 minutes later:
OK, LOOKS GOOD. ARE YOU SURE THIS COMPUTER WILL WORK WITH OUR COMPUTERS THOUGH? I AM WOORIED THAT WE MAY GET IT AND HAVE TO RETURN IT. MAYBE WE SHOULD JUST GO TO BEST BUY.

THANKS NICK
2 minutes later:
ALSO, COULD YOU COME OVER AND ORDER IT BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER BOUGHT ANYTHING ON THE INTERNET AND I DONT KNOW HOW. CALL ME.

THANKS NICK.
oh my god. :banghead:

I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY SHE CONSTANTLY TYPES IN CAPS. I think I could figure out the 'CAPS LOCK' key even if I had a lobotomy.
To give a little background, this woman is only 30 and leads an office that is responsible for about 2 million dollars of business per year. She's on the computer all day setting up furniture repairs and work orders with clients and furniture insurance companies. I can't even imagine what they think of her. [/rant]

Computer ignorance is a very annoying thing. It is difficult to deal with these people.

They are usually the ones that pass on a virus and are clueless as to how to remove it.

They do make a lot of money for tech support people though! Job security.

Yes, she is a very attractive 30 year old mom. And yes, her husband works midnights as a cop so he gets up at 6pm.

She further asked me to ORDER IT ONLINE USING MY CREDIT CARD AND I'D GET REIMBURSED. Then I kind of went off and yelled at her about the caps lock. I told her that buying things online is 'just as good' as buying them at Best Buy - but you don't have to interact with the idiots that work there.

After i sent it I thought twice about that last part because maybe idiots feel more comfortable buying stuff from other idiots, hence why Best Buy is profitable.

Thanks for all your support through this major ordeal of mine (lol).

edit: I wish that the Appletalk voices would yell when they read CAPS LOCK type. That would be funny to capture these emails as sound files.

I feel like going green at NN is the gateway to eternal dork-dom. I was thinking of some things I should do before I hit the mark, such as:

1. Going on a sex bender (because it may become scarce)
2. Throw out all my vintage t-shirts and replace them with Jaguar and Panther release shirts.
3. Learn C++ or some other dorky programming language.
4. Grow a ponytail.
5. Get a "Windoze rulez" tattoo on my ass.
6. Paint my body green for the occasion - Incredible Hulk style
7. Retiring.
Welcome to dork-dom, buddy ... you can start growing your ponytail today

Don't confuse experience with intellect. Most self-proclaimed "computer literate" people only know how to play with menus and know nothing about what's really going on under their polished gui. Lots of idiots are very good a this, as can be seen at any number of internet chat boards.

EXACTLY!! Most people I've ever encountered in the workplace that "know computers" have not done much more than learn, by rote, the steps that are required over-and-over in the course of a day's work. As soon they need to "go outside the lines" , they're completely stumped.

Part of the reason for this, I've found, is actually Windows and the proprietary or other business software used by companies.

How the hell are you going to explain to people the underlying concepts of the interface structure when it's patently obvious that the interface designers have no ****ing clue that such concepts even EXIST!?

When I was instructing my successor on the job this spring (XP, Office, IE, Lotus Notes ( ), an Oracle-based payment-system monstrosity, and proprietary radio editing/playlist management software), there were so many obvious UI exceptions, "different" approaches, or just-plain boneheaded non-decisions that she really had no choice but rote memorization.

I tried to give her a grasp of fundamental concepts by pointing out or asking her how one would *expect* things to work, which she said helped her a lot, but in the end, rote memorization is easier to teach - though it promotes fundamental computer illiteracy/ignorance.

My parents are like this. My mum is a whizz with her accounting program, but when she gets into the windows/internet part, all hell breaks loose.
