NEWNAN, Ga. (AP) - Across the Bible Belt this Halloween, some little ghosts and goblins might get shooed away by the neighbors - and some youngsters will not be allowed to go trick-or-treating at all - because the holiday falls on a Sunday this year.
"It's a day for the good Lord, not for the devil," said Barbara Braswell, who plans to send her 4-year-old granddaughter Maliyah out trick-or-treating in a princess costume on Saturday instead.
Some towns around the country are decreeing that Halloween be celebrated on Saturday to avoid complaints from those who might be offended by the sight of demons and witches ringing their doorbell on the Sabbath. Others insist the holiday should be celebrated on Oct. 31 no matter what.

I found this interesting story about the Halloween and it's Christian roots.
http://www.americancatholic.org/Mess...001/Family.asp
When you think of Halloween, what comes to mind? For a lot of people, Halloween has become synonymous with candy, costumes, scary stuff, witches, ghosts and pumpkins. But do you know the Christian connection to the holiday?
The true origins of Halloween lie with the ancient Celtic tribes who lived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany. For the Celts, November 1 marked the beginning of a new year and the coming of winter. The night before the new year, they celebrated the festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead. During this festival, Celts believed the souls of the dead—including ghosts, goblins and witches—returned to mingle with the living. In order to scare away the evil spirits, people would wear masks and light bonfires.
When the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches to the Samhain festival, such as making centerpieces out of apples and nuts for Pomona, the Roman goddess of the orchards. The Romans also bobbed for apples and drank cider—traditions which may sound familiar to you. But where does the Christian aspect of the holiday come into play? In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallow’s Even or “holy evening.” Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day.
The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the “communion of saints,” which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through the communion of saints “a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things” (#1475).

Another interesting Article about it
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/7280/samhain.html
This one paragraph is very interesting though:
The Christian religion, with its emphasis on the 'historical' Christ and his act of redemption 2000 years ago, is forced into a linear view of time, where 'seeing the future' is an illogical proposition. In fact, from the Christian perspective, any attempt to do so is seen as inherently evil. This did not keep the medieval Church from co-opting Samhain's other motif, commemoration of the dead. To the Church, however, it could never be a feast for all the dead, but only the blessed dead, all those hallowed (made holy) by obedience to God - thus, All Hallow's, or Hallowmas, later All Saints and All Souls.

Now you see how Christians feel when the Christian haters get all petty about Christianity in here.
But yeah, this is silly and petty.
I wouldn't want it on a Sunday night if I was a kid though. Not as many people home.

Who said anything about Christian hating? It's got nothing to do with that. This whole issue is pretty silly and stupid that was the point of this post.

This Christian is irked about Halloween being on a Sunday also. I will be at Church while my neighborhood children and families are out trick-or-treating.
I am not bothered by Halloween. It has lost all of it's meaning like Christmas in recent decades. Plus the kids love it.

My daughter will be going out as a pteranodon. She won't be mistaken for a demon, will she?
Seriously, what do they plan to do? Ban October 31 from landing on a Sunday?

Oh no, not those pesky christian haters again.
Going around spoiling the lords day.
What next? Atheists door knocking in the bible belt?
(Actually that's been done in an Australian TV show called John Saffran versus God. I haven't seen it, but it's supposed to be quite good.)

Nope. It suits your role as victim, finding imaginary christian haters.
Anyway, sort of back to the topic - I have noticed some kids around here going trick or treating, even though there is not really a history of this festival here. I wonder how many lollies they get.

Perhaps it's me, but you don't have to do the trick or treating on the actual day of Halloween. Why don't they just bump it to Saturday or Friday night.
It's not a federal or State mandated thing. It's up to the local government.
In fact, they could simply not have it if most people wanted it that way.

The thing is that everyone in the community needs to agree upon the same date. If only a handful of people insist on sending their children out on Saturday, it's unlikely that those children will be getting any candy. However, it's been my experience that these extremists tend to be completely opposed to the entire concept of Halloween ... Sunday or not.

Xenu again what are you going on about? I wasn't being paranoid about there being Christian haters. As I pointed out, there have been people here that have admitted to it.
So your little rant is not only off base, but is getting on the verge of fanboyism.
You need to look at yourself in the mirror before pointing out other people's "flaws"
You seem hell bent on projecting baseless ideals or desires that you have about someone onto people you don't even know.

Here in southern Utah, if a holdiay falls on Sunday it is celebrated on Saturday (at least the activity portions of the holiday). You get the easter bunny on saturday, you get santa on saturday, you get 4th of July fireworks on saturday, and you get trick-or-treating on saturday. And all of the public activities are held on saturday as well if the holdiday comes on sunday. Even New Years Eve dances (that's more funny to me than the other ones).
I am a member of the predominent religion, and I have no problems with everything being on Saturay... we have enough distractions on Sunday as it is.
ps. please stop quoting Zimphire. it's pretty annoying to have him ignored yet still have to read his threads. thanks.

Does it really matter? If christians have a problem with it they shouldn't be letting their kids do it anyway.
I'm still curious as to what rational objection there is to celebrating halloween.
