Google Desktop Search might just be too good. Using the new software, I was able to bypass user names and passwords that secure Web-based e-mail programs and view personal messages sent and received on public PCs…

If I understand correctly Google Desktop is Spotlight for Windows. Will Spotlight feature the same security threat that Google Desktop does already on PC?

That's like asking, "does Macos X suck as much as Windows?"

And you know that answer to that, right?

Spotlight I imagine will run under the permissions of the user using it. Windows is built worse than OS X. Thus Spotlight won't be a security threat I imagine.

That said, Google desktop bar isn't a security threat, it's a program that isn't going to gimp itself because Microsoft doesn't know how to make their OS secure.

No, I don't. I'm no security expert.

The question is probably whether Spotlight maintains its database per user or globally. It is reasonable to assume the Spotlight database is global to save disk space. In that case Spotlight would probably be susceptible to the same security threat.

If it has to be installed as root it is Goodle Desktop's obligation to respect the users' privace, not Window's.

That's like saying that Mac OSX is more secure than Windows simply because it's not Windows.

I'm confident that Spotlight will respect user security.
