I know a lot of people esp Windows apologists like to blame the end user.

But sorry, MS needs to take the ability to do this away. It needs nipped in the bud.

My parents get hit by it all the time. I'm sick of dealing with it. They are talking about buying a Mac however.

It is more the consumers fault (like your parents) for continuing to support Microsoft even though it is venerable to worms, spyware and virus' yet keep on buying the crap!

Yeah well that would be my fault. Dad wanted a computer to trade stocks on. I wanted to get him the most compatible.

He is thinking about getting one of the new iMacs now.

I don't feel sorry for people with PC's (or any other product) that don't work. When they finally do get a Mac cuz I talk them into it they always say "I didn't know any better". Well that is their fault. They should do research before they buy and if it causes that many problems after they should look into solving the problem but looking into another alternative.

Most malware asks for permission and/or tells you that it's loaded with something, in the end it's STILL up to the end user to NOT install the crap.

Just stay with a Mac.

I agree, spyware is a serious issue, and one of the main reasons I'm personally trying to get my mother to use a Mac (my dad already does). She loves to install toolbar extras for IE, no matter how often we tell her not to

At the very least, it looks like spyware detection/removal software is going to be as much of a necessity on PCs as virus protection.

i was going to post the same screenshot.

from article:
Dell, the world’s largest computer maker, usually does not become deeply involved in software issues. But in recent months, it has accelerated efforts to root out software viruses, worms and spyware because they are turning off potential computers users.
oh contraire mon fra (sp?), i think the real reason Dell is so eager to help the poor end user with their spyware problems was mentioned in the article's previous paragraph:

article's previous paragraph:
In July, Dell began offering tech-support services for customers willing to pay $39 per incident for diagnostic help in fighting spyware. George declined to say how many people have paid the fee, but said “demand has outstripped capacity.”

i would charge more than 40 bucks to clear out a computer. i dont think dell is actually trying to profit off of this.
