Hello,
I am suggesting to replace the post count feature by a word count. That might be stopping all the "+1" posts and people might be forced to delivery quality of posts instead of quantity of posts. I also recommend that when such a feature is implemented be sure to trim the posts (remove spaces)
What do you think?

Have to say I find the idea of word count OR post count rather dumb.
Adding a word count to the already exisiting post count makes a lot of sense, in my opinion; but just erasing the latter? Not good, I think.
And wouldn't it be lovely to reveal that someone posts alot but doesn't write alot and therefore publicly showing him being a babbler? Sounds good to me.

Yeah.. word count would be better.
That is if people didn't PURPOSELY write books just to get a higher word count.
We don't need a forum full of verbal masturbation.
I mean no more than it already is.

Do smilies count as a word? Pictures? A picture can say 1,000 words!
Hmm...

I'd rather prefer to see a "+1" instead of incredibly large copy-paste dummy text!

We also don't need a forum of wannabe 10,000+ posters who post loads and loads of short, useless posts instead of fewer, long, informative ones.

Exactly, would you prefer:

I'd prefer post count by word count. Only posts with a certain number of words would count as posts.
Oh, and this is in the wrong forum.

The database would literally explode and probably kill a few people if this were somehow implemented.
Good idea as it is, it simply isn't gunna happen here.

BS. Counting the words and adding them to a variable is a non-issue for any db. Steve

what if someone just copy an article from somewhere and paste it over here?
BTW.. I see some forums mention that the post has to be at least 35 words in order to hit submit.

Why word counts? A concise message is often more effective than a verbose one. And it would weigh more from those who just post in the political lounge as the nature of the beast.
Just take away the visual on the post count and leave the colors (green for regular posters, yellow for newbies and something like blue for mods).

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

This would be the ideal solution, but then you'd inevitably get people bitching about "OMG I WORKED SO HARD FOR MY POST COUNT WAAAAA WAAAAAAAAAA"

He's not talking about the word count function itself, he's talking about the EFFECTS of a word count function; namely, people stuffing their posts with nonsense text to artificially inflate their word count, which, if enough people do it, WILL overwhelm the storage capacity of the bulletin board database.

Invariably, 90% of the lounge posts would consist soley of that phrase.

Uhm, so how exactly would it force people to deliver quality ?
This is how future +1 posts will look like:

once i upgrade the board i'll likely remove postcounts and replace them with more user status titles. more ranges, like: 1-20, 21-50, 51-100, 101-250, 251-400, 401-500, 501-750, 751-1000, 1001-2000, etc..

I think that it should be left as a "Post Count."

How about user moderation of posts then? If enough people, say 10 or 15, mark a post as "not worth a count," then that post does not increase the post count (and perhaps a message is put up saying such action was taken). This would make +1ers worthless since people would see such non-sense and mark it as their reading.
Of course, by default, all posts would increase the count, but then the marking system would only take away what was already given.
And maybe there is a counter-marking system for bringing back posts, so if enough people see a marked post as wrongly mark, they could de-mark it.
This system is open to abuse, but the post count system itself is already being abused. It would be tougher to abuse this system. Perhaps along with it, free e-mail accounts should no longer be allowed for signup. I don't know about you, but I've never gotten SPAM from MacNN.
Thinking about a different approach, we should just have a rating system for posts in which each user has a 2nd post count of "worthwhile" posts, and by user moderation, this would be increased. This count would hopefully never grow very large. But having a post count of rated posts by your peers would make for something worth "bragging" about, compared to the current post count system.
It's probably the case where very few lounge posts would be worth such a rating. But again, the system is open to abuse.

I personally find some people's ridiculously high post counts in a small period of time to be sad.
It'd be nice if there were some way to give some a "Loser" status for achieving say 1000 posts in a couple months. Not that anyone's a loser, I'm just saying...

It'd be interesting to implement such a system here, if none other than to observe how people treat it. Unfortunately, it'd mimic Slashdot a bit too much for my tastes.

I'd back this. Unfortunately, it seems like those who crappost the most in a short span of time are sometimes celebrated or encouraged (even at times inadvertantly)...for some strange reason.

I think a plus one should get a warning. If you do it again, you should be suspended. Its one thing to post some non-sense photo in a thread you know is going to be locked, but just upping your post count is lame.
I like the "stopped counting" one, or there should be a "post whore" if you average per day/avg. word count is too high/low.

So who's is to judge if a post's content is equal to +1 ?
There are a million ways of posting a +1 post without using the actual "+1" !
Would a " " qualify as a +1 ?
How about " " ?
Or "I agree"
Or...or...or...

Giving special titles to people who do a certain amount in a certain time will almost assuredly create a new breed of stupidity that strives for such titles.

It would mimic slashdot, at least, the idea regarding "good posts." But I've never used the ./ system as I don't read anything over there, so I don't know exactly how it works. And I don't think the "bad posts" idea is implemented in any form there, but I really don't know. Everything I know about the system is info I have picked up 3rd hand, mostly from people here talking about it.

I'd be willing to bet they got the idea from Slashdot.
They have a "karma" system setup, by which certain individuals who have points can moderate a post up or down.

But then Zimph wouldn't lead in the count anymore; most of his posts don't even have one word in them!
(Unless, of course, [img] counts as a word.)

If you remove the public display of post counts, will we still be able to see our own, personal post counts so we can keep track (for ourselves) of how many we've made?

If removed, remove it completely.
Otherwise, people will still be posting to get their pc up.
If you don't know, you might not care as much.

Not that I don't care, but I still like to know how many posts I have made. You'd still have people spamming posts like mad with a display of "rank" based on post counts. You'd have to do away with all indications of "rank" entirely to really make a dent in the problem.

An upgrade, eh? Hmm, I nearly forgot about this infamous "upgrade" it's been so long...

something needs to be done, this has come up time and time again... I like the ranges, because then you would have to check the profiles for the exact posts, which would keep a lot of the pimple kids from making +1 posts. anything else would be too complex.

They have a "karma" system setup, by which certain individuals who have points can moderate a post up or down.
I'm for adding karma points. Great way of keeping everyone in line.
