Why would anyone buy an HP iPod over an Apple one?? Have they released any sales figures? Obviously Apple is trying to make the platform seem more open, but what's the point if HP are just selling the same product but re-branded? I don't get it.

The point is that the hPod isn't the kicker for Apple (or anybody else for that matter)...what's important for Apple is that HP is bundling iTunes with every machine out the door and that will help iTMS/iTunes/iPod/Apple in the long run...

I thought it was because stupid windowse people see an apple on something and automatically think it won't work with there computers... so now they see an hp logo and think "yippee I can buy one of these things now, they finally made it work with my computer!"

Good move by Apple.

Does this mean that we should recommend HPs to our "PC only" friends?

What he said. HP is banking on the already established iPod brand. They believe they can make more money this way instead of starting from scratch with their own player like Dell did.

SRP, yes.

But in reality, you'll be able to find hPod's for around $280 /$ 380 in some places.

Not to mention the strong market presence HP already has over Apple in most areas. Do you think Wal*Mart or Radio Shack would be selling Apple iPods? Probably never, but the more outlets there are to purchase an iPod, the more they will sell. It's a great idea, even if some people think it makes no sense.

hp has more sales channels than apple has. And that will lead to more sales and more exposures for ipod.

what about that IMAC?
can you play DOOM on it?

but about the question at hand, i have yet to see a HP iPod. Or even hear anyone else mention them. But if nothing else, it's good to have them on a PC website for reasons mentioned above.

The point of the hPod is to sell more iPods since an hPod IS an iPod!

Either way, Apple wins.

The point is, Carly wants in Jobs pants.

Seriously though, aligning themselves with Apple can't hurt them, it brings them more respect something HP doesn't get from a lot of people, it gives them a great product to resell, it gives them an already established brand to merge with another brand. It gives Apple free add space with HP, it means the iPod ends up wherever HP is sold, it means people who have a Pavilion, Printer, Scanner and Camera by HP will want HP's iPod too where as they might not have bought it previously.

HP appeals to a very different market than Apple does, this helps a lot.

I've actually seen the HP iPod in Costco. It's getting pretty main stream when you see one there.

I'd love to think that it's an experiment by Apple, and that if it goes well they'll open it up further.

Sadly, that's probably not the case. Jobs would never allow it.
